A great movie theater is achieved two ways: by beauty and technical presentation, or by being "a movie theater by movie fans for movie fans". Here are the coolest movie theaters in the world.
1. Le Grand Rex (Paris, France)
If you like your movies on a grand scale, the name of this theater—the largest in Europe—says it all. When film producer Jacques Hak commissioned its construction in 1931, he had a single goal in mind: to make The Rex one of the world's most beautiful theaters. He succeeded. With seating for 2,800 and a design scheme meant to mimic the great outdoors, Le Grand Rex's vast space is perfectly matched to the big-budget movies it shows.
Why It Stands Out: Le Grand Rex is the kind of theater that only Hollywood could dream up; its Art Deco1) fa?ade2) beckons3) with hypnotizing4) neon signs, which lead patrons5) into a fairytale-like interior space. Which means there's plenty to look at here, even if the movie stinks.
2. Raj Mandir Cinema (Jaipur, India)
Nicknamed "the Pride of Asia", few movie theaters in the world can boast as dedicated and loyal an audience as the regularly swelling crowds that turn up to this world-famous Hindi movie theater. Now in its 40th year, this pink movie palace seats more than 1,200 people and still sells out on a regular basis.
Why It Stands Out: Like something out of a Bollywood movie, "dreamlike" is the only way to describe a night at the Raj Mandir, where the lighting schemes change with the time of day and soft floral6) scents are pumped in through the air ducts7).
3. Cine Thisio (Athens, Greece)
At the foot of the Acropolis—with Instagram-worthy views of the Parthenon—this outdoor, summer-only theater gives moviegoers8) the chance to catch a first-run9) flick10) and see some of Athens' most popular tourist hotspots.
Why It Stands Out: With views like this, who cares whether you're being forced to sit through the newest Transformers film?
4. Avoca Beach Picture Theatre
(Avoca Beach, Australia)
There's no reason to choose between the beach or theater at this cinema, which opened just a couple hundred feet from the Pacific Ocean near Sydney in 1951. Reminiscent11) of an old-school surf shack12), the cinema's laid-back13) vibe14) extends beyond aesthetics; an outdoor terrace15) lends itself to16) leisurely drink before the movie, and an anything-goes17) lineup of movies could see a recent Oscar winner sharing screen time with a classic Shirley Temple film.
Why It Stands Out: It takes a special kind of cinema to lure moviegoers away from the beach, and the Avoca Beach Picture Theatre has been doing it repeatedly for more than 60 years.
5. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
(Texas, United States)
There are more than 20 Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas across the U.S. at this point, but it's the original lot18), first founded in Austin in 1997, that have set the tone for the outposts19) that have followed. And by "tone" we mean a place for serious movie lovers only. The kind of cinephiles20) who are as excited by first-run superhero movies as they are a little-seen documentary.
Why It Stands Out: The Alamo doesn't play when it comes to disruptive patrons. Remember the theater owner that kicked out a girl for texting a few years back? That was The Alamo. Or the theater that created a fun series of anti-texting PSAs21)? That was The Alamo, too. And in 2013, founder Tim League took to Twitter to announce that he was banning Madonna from all Alamo theaters until she apologized for texting during a New York Film Festival screening22) of 12 Years a Slave.
6. Secret Cinema (Worldwide)
The first rule of Secret Cinema is that you do not talk about Secret Cinema, at least not its whereabouts. It is an easy enough rule to follow considering it's not an actual venue, but rather a series of screenings at secret locations around the world. Past engagements have included screenings of Lawrence of Arabia at London's Alexandra Palace and The Grand Budapest Hotel at the landmark Farmiloe Building in Clerkenwell23).
Why It Stands Out: This is the only movie experience that requires you to register your name and location on their Website to be added to the invite list.
