A
If you have ever been discouraged because of failure, please read on. For often, achieving what you set out to do is not the important thing. Let me explain.
Two brothers decided to dig a deep hole behind their house. As they were working, a couple of older boys stopped by to watch.
“What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors.
“We plan to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” one of the brothers volunteered excitedly.
The older boys began to laugh, telling the younger ones that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible.
After a long silence, one of the diggers picked up a jar full of spiders(蜘蛛), worms and a variety of insects. He removed the lid and showed the wonderful contents to the visitors who were laughing them.
Then he said quietly and confidently, “Even if we dont dig all the way through the earth, look what we found along the way!”
Their goal was far too ambitious, but it did cause them to dig. And that is what a goal is for---to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen; in other words, to set us to digging!
But not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end successfully. Not every relationship will carry on. Not every hope will come to pass. Not every love will last. Not every attempt will be completed. Not every dream will be realized.
But when you fall short of your aim, perhaps you can say, “Yes, but look at what I found along the way! Look at the wonderful things which have come into my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging that life is lived. And I believe it is joy in the journey, in the end, that truly matters.

“No air-conditioning? How can you sleep?”a friend asks, horrified. Ive just told him that my family has decided to shut the air-conditioner off, and cut our electric bill.
On this first night of our cost-cutting adventure, its only eighty-five degrees. Were not going to suffer, but the three kids grumble anyway.
“Its too hot to sleep.”my thirteen-year-old daughter complains.
“Im about to die from this heat.”her brother says.
“Just try it tonight.”I tell them. In truth, Im too tired to argue for long. My face is sweaty. But I lie quietly, listening to the cricket(蟋蟀) choirs (合唱)outside. That reminds me of childhood.
I think about grandma, who lived to ninety-two and was still in charge of my mothers garden until a few weeks ago before she died. And then Im back there in her house and the summer heat of my childhood. I moved my pillow to the foot of my grandmothers bed, and angled my face toward the open window. I turned the pillow over, hunting for the cooler side.
Grandma saw me struggling, “If you just watch for the breeze (light wind),”she said, “youll cool off and fall asleep.”
She cranked up(拉起) the Venetian blinds (百葉窗). I stared at the white curtain, willing it to move. Lying still in waiting, I suddenly noticed life outside the window, the bug(蟲子) choruses, neighbors, porch-sitting late, speaking in soft words that comforted me.
“Mom, did you hear that?”my seven-year-old asks, “I think its an owl(貓頭鷹) family.”
“Probably.” I tell him, “Just keep listening...”
Without the noisy air-conditioner, the house is strangely peaceful, and the night noises seem close enough to touch. I hope Im awake tonight, when the first breeze sneaks in.endprint

It is a common belief that of all the wonderful gifts that weve been given, one of the greatest is freedom. That is why so many of us try to gain freedom at any cost. But are all kinds of freedom worth seeking?
One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Multicolored creations of varying shapes and sizes filled the skies like beautiful birds moving and dancing. As the strong winds blew against the kites, a string kept them in check.
Instead of blowing away with the wind, they arose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the restraining (約束) string and the tail kept them being pulled along, facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled and trembled against the string, they seemed to say, “Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!”They flew beautifully even as they fought the restriction of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose. “Free at last,”it seemed to say. “Free to fly with the wind.”
Yet freedom from restraint, simply put, is at the mercy of an unsympathetic soft wind. It soon fell to the ground and landed in a mass of weeds and string against a dead bush. “Free at last” free to lie powerless in the dirt, to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to get stuck lifeless against the first obstruction (障礙物).
How much like kites we sometimes are. The Heaven gives us misfortunes and restrictions, rules to follow from which we can grow and gain strength. Restraint is a necessary match for the winds of opposition. Some of us fought at the rules so hard that we never fly to reach the heights we might have obtained. We keep part of the rules or laws and never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground.endprint
Let us each rise to the great heights, recognizing that some of the restraints that we may feel annoyed about are actually the steady force that helps us go up and achieve.

A. was restrained by the wind
B. tried to gain absolute freedom
C. wanted to dance like birds
D. were at the mercy of the wind

A. Freedom prevents us from flying.
B. It is restraints that stop us rising.
C. Without restrains without freedom.
D. There is no justice without freedom.
38. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. If we want to fly higher, we should fight hard at rules.
B. People shouldnt obey rules because its hard to follow.
C. Rules are necessary for us to reach a higher level.
D. Some rules are too strict for people to obey.
39. In the authors opinion, some of the restraints .
A. are wonderful gifts given by the God
B. are something that we are upset about
C. can give us power to fly higher
D. should be abolished right away
40. The passage is probably written for .
A. general people B. teenagers
C. freedom seekers D. parents
D
When you look at yourself in the mirror, do you ever wonder why you look the way you do?
No two faces look exactly alike, making a human face as unique as a fingerprint. Genetics obviously play a major role---no two faces share the same DNA. But even in identical twins, who have the same DNA, there are still small differences in their appearances. So what is it that makes each face different?
The answer lies in a small piece of you NDA called a “gene enhancer”, according to a study published in the journal Science. “There are thousands of enhancers in the human genome(基因組),”study leader Axel Visel, a research with Berkeley Lab, US, told Discovery.
According to Visel, these DNA pieces act like switches, turning genes on and off and therefore determining whether a certain facial feature develops in a fetus(胎兒) while it is still in the womb(子宮).
Whats interesting about gene enhancers is that they dont have to be found anywhere close to the genes they affect. They are able to control their targets from far away, which makes them even more influential.
To test how powerful these special DNA pieces are in shaping the face, researchers deleted three of the gene enhancers in mice and compared them with normal mice at 8 weeks of age. The results showed that each enhancer deletion caused a distinct set of differences in the shape of the face---for example, causing an increase or decrease in facial length or width.endprint
In fact, scientists first noticed the existence of gene enhancer long ago, but they called them “junk DNA” back then because they didnt produce proteins and were thought to have no biological function. But now “its increasingly clear that important functions are deeply and firmly fixed in this ‘junk,” Visel told New Scientist.
Understanding this may help scientists learn why and how things go wrong as a fetus develops, leading to facial defects(變異) such as cleft lips(唇腭裂). While some of these defects are caused by genetic mutations(變異), researchers want to study whether gene enhancers also play a role.
41. The main purpose of the first paragraph is .
A. to arouse readers interest to go further reading
B. to encourage readers to look at himself in the mirror
C. to invite readers to answer a scientific question
D. to remind the readers that everyones face is different
42. Which of the following statement is True according to the passage?
A. A humans face is determined by his fingerprints.
B. No identical twins have exactly the same appearance.
C. Its unknown what makes each face different.
D. People with the same DNA have the same faces.
43. According to the passage, gene enhancers .
A. play an important role in shaping ones face
B. can only affect the genes they are close to
C. are not so powerful as the scientists expected
D. are not found by scientist until recently
44. Why are gene enhancer called as “junk DNA”?
A. Because they had no biological function.
B. Because they looked like the “junks”.
C. Because they only affected the facial characteristics.
D. Because they didnt produce proteins.
45. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Development of solving problems of facial birth defects.
B. A new discovery of genetics is found by the journal Science.
C. Gene enhancers determine facial characteristics.
D. How facial feature develops in a fetus in the womb.

Mary, a twelve-grader, sits at her desk, reviewing her homework assignments for the evening. English: read three chapters and write a journal response. Math: complete 30 problems, showing all work. Science: do a worksheet, front and back. French: study vocabulary for tomorrows test. Its going to be a long night.
This describes a typical weeknight for students across the US, one of the most homework-intensive countries in the world.
Obviously, there are negatives to overloading students. Have you ever heard of a child getting sick because of homework? According to William Crain, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at City College of New York and the author of Reclaiming Childhood,“Kids are developing more school-related stomachaches, headaches, sleep problems, and depression than ever before.”
In addition, a student who receives excessive homework “will miss out on active playtime, which is essential for learning social skills, proper brain development, and warding off childhood obesity,” according to Harris Cooper, Ph.D., a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke University.

與上文的secret and real 和下文的your sleeping position shows the real 相對應,原詞復現(xiàn)。
endprint
前文提到y(tǒng)ou are a very open person, 那么就應該是你很容易被新的想法和潮流所應影響(influenced)
上文提到“you are very shy”, 那么就應該是“you arent very confident”,arent confident和shy是詞語同現(xiàn)?!
前文提到You worry a lot, 那么這里就應該是容易不高興(easily upset)。
由下文可知,應選B.nervous。
有下文的so youre often defensive可知。
下文的you dont normally like meeting people可知。
You always say what you think,那么這里就應該是不怕“惹怒(annogy)”別人,故選C.
16. his 回指人稱代詞He,詞組come to his rescue表示“來救他”,意同come to rescue him。
19. with 因be filled with是固定搭配,表示“充滿”。
20. was approaching
What are you doing?”asked...
Then he said quietly and confidently, “Even if we dont dig all the way through the earth, look what we found along the way!”
由第八段的but it did cause them to dig. And that is what a goal is for-to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen(但正是這個目標鼓勵著他們?nèi)ネ?,這就是目標的作用——驅(qū)使我們朝著我們選定的方向前進)可知,作者是在說明”目標很重要”。
endprint
根據(jù)下文兩個孩子的話“Its too hot to sleep.”“Im about to die from this heat.” her brother says可知,孩子在“抱怨”沒有空調(diào)難以忍受。
That reminds me of childhood可知,作者是回憶起童年同樣是沒有空調(diào)的一晚。
根據(jù)第七段的“If you just watch for the breeze,” she said, “youll cool off and fall asleep”可知,祖母讓作者觀察微風。
Mom, did you hear that?”my seven-year-old asks, “I think its an owl family.”
根據(jù)第三段第三句的they seemed to say,“Let me go! Let me go!I want to be free!”
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段第二句的...rules to follow from which we can grow and gain strength和最后一句的...never rise high enough to get our tails off the ground可知此句意思為“我們中的一些人對法律抵抗得那么厲害,以致達不到本應該到達的高度”,因此,法律或規(guī)則對我們達到應達的高度是有必有的,故選C。
根據(jù)最后一句的some of the restraints that we may feel annoyed about are actually the steady force that helps us go up and achieve可知答案。
So what is it that makes each face different?
But even in identical twins, who have identical DNA, there are still small differences in their appearances可知答案。
The answer lies in a small piece of you NDA called a “gene enhancer”可知,面部的不同取決于gene enhancer。
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段的they didnt produce proteins and were thought to have no biological function可知D正確,注意A答案because they had no biological function的陳述是不對的,因為這個只是科學家當時的錯誤認識,不是事實。
1. E 題目關鍵信息“enjoy some live music and learn something new”,與E選項的“enjoying live music”相匹配,故選E。
從“doesnt care much about how much the ticket might cost”和B音樂會昂貴的價格也可以得到印證。
4. F 題目關鍵信息“costs no more than 100 Yuan”,對應F選項音樂會的價格“Price: 90 ~ 680 Yuan”--較適合。endprint
