But when youth, the dream, departs,
It takes something from our hearts,

We are stronger, and are better,

Following youth, with flying feet,
And will never come again.
Something beautiful is vanished,
And we sigh for it in vain:
We behold it everywhere,
On the earth, and in the air,
But it never comes again.

理查德·亨利·斯托達德(Richard Henry Stoddard,1825—1903),美國評論家、詩人,生于美國的馬薩諸塞州,當(dāng)過鐵匠。理查德1849年開始以寫作為生,隨后供職于多個雜志社,擔(dān)任編輯和評論員。他的詩歌作品最為人所知,其作品以細膩、理想化著稱。
