On a rare occasion I was able to admire a traditional Chinese painting done on rice paper and in color. The painting is entitled “Boiling Tea in Directors Office”. Researches indicate that it was a painting created in 1971 by Mr. Zhu Zuizhu in celebration of Mr. Tian Suyus birthday. The three were all members of Xiling Seal Art Society. The society is the countrys most prominent, most prestigious, and oldest art association, founded in 1904 by a group of prestigious artists including Wu Changshuo, a painter, calligrapher and seal engraver.
Zhu Zuizhu (1910-1974), a native of Hangzhou, was a seal artist and painter. He was a member of the society in its early decades. Mr. Jin Yuefang (1929-1986) joined the society as a collector of art. Mr. Tian Suyu (1894-1972), a native of Shaoxing, was a painter and calligrapher. He joined the society in its early decades. Jin proposed to Zhu to create a painting in honor of Tians birthday and Zhu responded enthusiastically. This painting was born.
What makes the painting fascinating and special is not merely the West Lake in a perspective that suggests the location of the Xiling Seal Art Societys headquarters on the West Lake. That year, Zhu was 61, three years before he passed away. Tian was 77 and he had one more year to live. The birthday painting was done in time. Mr. Zhu composed a poem and inscribed it on the painting. Tian wrote a poem in reply. Tian wrote three more. The painting and the poems are witness to the friendship of the three and their respect paid to their predecessors of the society.
What also makes the painting fascinating and special are inscriptions added to the painting on different occasions by other prominent members of the Xiling Seal Art Society. The acting president of the society Liu Jiang put an inscription on the painting in the autumn of 2013. He personally knew Mr. Zhu, the creator of the painting. He was an art student when he first met Zhu. Back then, Zhu ran a second-hand bookstore in a busy street in downtown. Liu visited that bookstore now and then. Ding Maolu, a senior member of the society, added an inscription to the painting in 2013.
Also written on the painting are short inscriptions by other key members of the society such as Yu Jianhua in 2013, Bao Fuxing in 2013, Wu Jingchu (a professor with China Academy of Art) in 2014, and Tong Yan (vice president of the society) in 2014, and Luo Hengguang in 2016.
They wrote inscriptions to respond to the three artists in a generation before them. They expressed their appreciation also for one additional reason: Zhu Zuizhus son Zhu Hengji is now a member of the society. Father and son members are quite rare in the history of the society. The senior and the junior from the Zhu family are one of the rare pairs. Zhu Hengji wrote a long inscription in 2015 to honor the painting done in 1971. He mentions in the inscription that Pan Tianshou, Zhang Zongxiang, Shao Feizi and Ruan Xingshan, all prestigious members of the society, had helped his father in various ways and he appreciates these masters generosity and kindness.
With so many poems and inscriptions and seals, the painting is no longer a single artwork by Zhu alone. It is an artwork jointly created by all the masters. It is said that scholarly artists of the society are known for their profound knowledge of Chinese classics and aesthetics and their general pursuit of knowledge, for their honesty, humility, reason, and trustworthiness, and for their sophistication, gentleness, wisdom, and simplicity. The painting reflects the characteristics of these members.
