One day， a poor boy who was trying to pay his way through school by selling goods from door to door found that he only had one dime （角） left. He was hungry so he decided to beg for a meal at the next house.

一天，一個(gè)貧困的小男孩正在為攢足學(xué)費(fèi)挨家挨戶地賣(mài)東西，饑餓的他發(fā)現(xiàn)身上只剩下一枚一角的硬幣了。于是他決定向下一戶人家要口飯吃。

However， he lost his nerve （不知所措）when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk .

然而，當(dāng)一位可愛(ài)的女孩打開(kāi)房門(mén)的時(shí)候，他卻有幾分不知所措了。他沒(méi)有乞討要飯，而只是乞求對(duì)方能給他一口水喝。女孩看出來(lái)他很餓，就給了他一大杯牛奶。

He drank it slowly， and then asked， “How much do I owe you？” “You dont owe me anything，” she replied. “Mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” He said， “Then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

小男孩慢慢地喝完牛奶，問(wèn)道：“我需要付給你多少錢(qián)？”她回答道：“你一分錢(qián)也不用付。我媽媽常常教導(dǎo)我，愛(ài)心不圖回報(bào)?！毙∧泻⒄f(shuō)：“那么，我只有從內(nèi)心深處感激你了！”

As Howard Kelly left that house he not only felt stronger physically， but also increased his faith in God and human race. He was about to give up and quit（停止；放棄） before this point.

當(dāng)霍華德·凱利離開(kāi)這戶人家的時(shí)候，他不僅感到自己渾身是勁，而且對(duì)上帝和整個(gè)人類(lèi)的信心也增強(qiáng)了。原本他打算放棄這一切的。

Years later the young woman became seriously ill. The local doctors were baffled （束手無(wú)策）. They finally sent her to a big city， where specialists could be called in to study her rare disease.

數(shù)年之后，那位年輕的女子患了重病，當(dāng)?shù)氐尼t(yī)生對(duì)此束手無(wú)策。最后，他們只好把她送到大城市去就醫(yī)，在那兒他們召集專(zhuān)家會(huì)診治療她這種疑難病癥。

Dr. Howard Kelly， now famous， was called in for the consultation （會(huì)診）. When he heard the name of the town she came from ， a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately， he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

名醫(yī)霍華德·凱利同時(shí)也被邀請(qǐng)來(lái)參加會(huì)診。當(dāng)他聽(tīng)到患者來(lái)自的那個(gè)城鎮(zhèn)的名字時(shí)，一個(gè)奇怪的念頭立即掠過(guò)他的腦海。于是他馬上穿過(guò)醫(yī)院的廊道徑直奔向她的病房。

Dressed in his doctors gown （工作服） he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day on， he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle， the battle was won.

身穿手術(shù)服的凱利醫(yī)生一眼就認(rèn)出了她?；氐綍?huì)診室他作出決定，一定要竭盡全力治好她的病。自那天起，凱利醫(yī)生就特別關(guān)注這個(gè)病例。經(jīng)過(guò)緊張艱苦的努力，治療終于成功了。

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval （核準(zhǔn)）. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side. The bill was sent to her room.

凱利醫(yī)生要求財(cái)務(wù)室把醫(yī)藥費(fèi)通知單送到他那里去核準(zhǔn)。他看了看，提筆在通知單的旁邊寫(xiě)了幾個(gè)字，然后醫(yī)藥費(fèi)通知單便送到了她的病房里。

She was afraid to open it because she was sure that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked at it， and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words...

“Paid in full with a glass of milk.” （Signed） Dr . Howard Kelly

她不敢打開(kāi)來(lái)看，因?yàn)樗芮宄?，治病的費(fèi)用將會(huì)花費(fèi)她整個(gè)余生來(lái)償還。最終，她還是打開(kāi)通知單看了看，通知單旁邊的小字吸引了她的注意力，她讀著這幾個(gè)字： “醫(yī)藥費(fèi)已以一杯牛奶全額支付?！?/p>

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently： “Thank you， God. Your love has spread through human hearts and hands.”
