在漢語和英語中,都有很多與動物有關(guān)的諺語,由于中西方的文化差異,同一類動物所具有的象征意義有所不同,甚至有很大的反差。所以我們要更多地了解西方的文化,才能學到更地道的英語,避免因為文化差異,在用英語交流時鬧出笑話。
Cat 貓
1. A cat in gloves (手套) catches no mice.
吃不了苦,一事無成。
2. It rains cats and dogs.
大雨滂沱。
3. Let the cat out of the bag.
秘密泄露;真相大白。
4. The cat shuts its eyes when stealing
cream.
掩耳盜鈴。
5. The scalded (燙傷) cat fears cold water.
一朝被蛇咬,十年怕井繩。
6. When the cat is away, the mice will play.
山中無老虎,猴子稱大王。
7. Curiosity killed the cat.
好奇害死貓。
8. Cats hide their claws (爪子).

Dog 狗

4. Dog does not eat dog.
同類不相殘。
5. He is a lucky dog.
他是個幸運兒。
6. A good dog deserves a good bone.
有功者受賞。
7. A living dog is better than a dead lion.
死獅不如活狗。
8. Give a dog a bad name and hang him.
欲加之罪,何患無辭。
Bird 鳥
1. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
雙鳥在林不如一鳥在手。
2. Birds of a feather flock (成群結(jié)隊) together.
物以類聚,人以群分。
3. The early bird catches the worm.
早起的鳥兒有蟲吃。
4. Fine feathers make fine birds.
人要衣裝,馬要鞍。
5. Kill two birds with one stone.
一箭雙雕。
6. Birds in their little nests agree.
同巢之鳥心兒齊。
Horse 馬
1. Dont ride the high horse.
不要擺架子。
2. A horse may stumble (失足) on four feet.
馬有四條腿,亦有失蹄時。
3. Lock the barn door after the horse is
stolen.
亡羊補牢。
4. Hair by hair you will pull out the horses
tail (尾巴).
水滴石穿。
5. A good horse is never of an ill color.
良馬無劣色。
6. A good horse should be seldom spurred
(鞭策).
好馬無需加鞭。
Fish 魚
1. Go to the sea, if you would fish well.
不入虎穴,焉得虎子。
2. The best fish swim near the bottom.
好魚常在水底游。(指珍貴的東西不易得
到)
3. Never offer to teach fish to swim.
不要班門弄斧。
4. He who would catch fish must not mind
getting wet.
有心采花不怕棘。
5. Venture (冒險,投機) a small fish to
catch a great one.
欲釣大魚,先舍小魚。
Wolf 狼
1. The wolf may lose his teeth, but never his
nature.
狼的牙齒會掉,但本性卻改不了。(指本性
難移)
2. He who keeps company with a wolf will learn
to howl.
跟狼在一起,就會學狼叫。(指近墨者黑或
入鄉(xiāng)隨俗)
3. When the wolf grows old, the crows (烏鴉)
ride him.
狼老遭鳥欺。
4. The wolf has a winning game when the
shepherds (牧羊人) quarrel.
螳螂捕蟬,黃雀在后。
5. He who makes himself a sheep shall be
eaten by the wolf.
甘心做綿羊,早晚喂豺狼。(指人弱受人欺)
注:It rains cats and dogs意為“傾盆大雨”,這一習語的來源有不同說法。一個說法是這個短語起源于北歐,在挪威神話中,貓被認為可以影響天氣,駕著風暴而來的女巫據(jù)說就是化身為貓的,而狗和狼則是風暴神歐丁的隨從,其中,狗是“風”的象征。另外一種說法是17世紀的英格蘭在下大雨的時候,由于街道排水設(shè)施太差,一下大雨就會水流成河,許多貓和狗被淹死,水流走后,街上都是貓和狗的尸體。還有一種說法是它來源于一個古老的法語詞 “catadoupe”, 意為瀑布,它的發(fā)音和 “cats and dogs” 有些相像,所以就有了 “rain cats and dogs” 的說法。
