There once lived a woman who had been blind for decades. Then one day she found adoctor who treated her with a new device the doctor had invented called the LaserphacoProbe. For the first time in over 30 years, the woman could regain her eyesight. The doctorresponsible for this life?changing surgery was called Dr Patricia E. Bath.

Dr Bath was an American ophthalmologist (眼科醫(yī)生), researcher, and advocate forthe prevention, treatment, and cure of blindness. She had an interest in science and medicinefrom a young age, which she said was first evoked by a chemistry kit her mother hadbought for her when she was young.

During a fellowship at Columbia University, Dr Bath realized that African Americanswere twice as likely to suffer from blindness than other patients she attended to. This observationled to her development of a community ophthalmology system, which increased theamount of eye care given to underserved communities. This allowed thousands of people toget early preventative care for conditions that would have otherwise been untreated, savingthe eyesight of many.

Dr Bath invented the new technique to remove cataracts (白內(nèi)障) by the LaserphacoProbe. This technique is still used around the world, and it has allowed doctors to restorepatients' eyesight in a more precise and less painful manner than techniques before it.

Cataracts develop as people age. They form when the proteins in the lens (晶狀體) ofthe eye break down, making the lens cloudy. This can significantly affect vision. Traditionalcataract surgery involved removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificiallens. However, this surgery was not always successful, and could be quite painful. DrBath succeeded in solving the problem.

Dr Bath made innovative contributions to the field of medicine which had long?lasting?impacts on the communities she served.

It was my birthday that day, and my grandfather gave me a gift—a piggy bank. It hadan opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough toreach in and get the money out. The only way to get the money was to break the piggy bankopen. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea. And he added,“The piggy bankwould help save your money so that, at the end of the year, you might have enough for thatbike you dreamed about.”He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into thepiggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised sincerely,“I wouldnt break it open until Icould afford my dream bike.”

Whenever my grandfather gave me some pocket money, he would say,“This is forspending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.”When he gave me larger amounts, it was clear for me to save the extra money in the piggybank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the?sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying mynew bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.

Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy deliciousice creams or beautiful presents, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinkingof that, my thoughts about buying those things went away. So for almost three years, I hadonly put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn't break mypiggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece ofnews on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. Asmany houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabbyclothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night. Staring at my piggy bank, I wasthinking about what I could do with it.
