Picturesque Zhejiang ? Showcased in Beijing
By Lu Yao, Zheng Wen
At Asian Culture and Tourism Exhibition which started at Beijing Agricultural Exhibition Center on May 16, 2019, Zhejiang showcased its splendor at a 120-square-meter booth. Under the theme of Picturesque Zhejiang, the province was represented by 20 plus tourism departments and tourism businesses from eight cities and regions across the province.
The exhibits vividly portrayed the natural beauty and cultural elegance in a bid to boost tourism. Wenzhou, a port city in the southeast of the province, exhibited a colorful array of seashell lacquer artworks. Displaying inspiration, art and craftsmanship, these seashell lacquers included jewel cases with images of birds and flowers painted in the traditional style, combs, and stationery cases with the elements of the Birds Nest and China? (two landmarks of Beijing), attracting a lot of visiting women. “Of all lacquerworks, the seashell ones are most luxurious,” notes Chen Canyuan, curator of the Seashell Sculpture Museum of Dongtou, Wenzhou. “Seashells are ground to the thinness of 2 hairs before they are cut into tiny balls, threads and slices. These exquisite building blocks are then embedded onto the base in black or other dark colors before layers of lacquer finishes are brushed on again and again and polished.”
Half a day, Chen received quite a few orders for his seashell lacquer artworks. The curator found it more delightful to visit the booths of foreign countries such as Afghanistan and Nepal and see the artworks of these countries. “These designs are inspirational,” he comments briefly.
Zhang Yunqu, a puppet show master, staged a string puppet show at the exhibition, attracting crowds of visitors. Zhang is from Pingyang, a county in southern Zhejiang. Pingyang Puppet is a national intangible cultural heritage. This puppet show is probably the most difficult of all puppet shows. Zhang uses 22 strings to manipulate a puppet which weighs about 5 kilograms. In his hands, the puppet moved in an unbelievably nimble manner, jumping and flying, and pedaling a miniature bike. The audience burst into laughter and loud applause.
Other cities and regions also brought the best to inspire visitors for traveling and sightseeing in their locations. Jinhua, a city in central Zhejiang, offered 500 free tickets for a visit to Hengdian World Studios. Tongxiang in northern Zhejiang displayed a large map showing all the attractions. Huzhou, also in northern Zhejiang, displayed a map with handmade images. Quzhou in southwestern Zhejiang exhibited silk scarves printed with drawings by village artists.
“We participate in this exhibition and showcase both time-old and new tourism attractions. We want to display the diverse styles of the beauty of Zhejiang to visitors from Asian countries. After all, we want to do everything possible to promote Picturesque Zhejiang, our golden call card,” says an official of Zhejiang Administration of Culture and Tourism.
