In 2003, as curators, Arata Isozaki and LIU invited ten international architects and ten Chinese architects to participate in an exhibition with the subject of globalisation and regional at Foshou Lake, Nanjing. We were honored to participate.
By lottery, we got plot 01, which is situated at a south facing slope and right next to the lake. In the background is the lush woods and mountains. Upon encountering the site, I thought of two words: ''hermitage'' and ''natural''. For our design team, the notion of ''hermitage'' represented an idealised pursuit of an artistic conception. It is embedded in the landscape, intertwined with nature, while pursuing a monastic silence-detached from urban life. The notion of ''natural'' is reinforced by the deployment of simple forms to fi t into environment, coexisting with a natural context and responding to the topography. Concurrently, the building also withdraws into its own little world.
Accordingly, one of the key design objectives is to minimise the building scale and allow it to merge into the natural environment. The building is embedded in the slope which avoids interrupting the primary view from top. Users cannot observe the building from the road because the roof top nearly flushes with the roadway elevation. The building is entered at its main entrance from the road elevation and once in, users walk down to the fi rst level. The multi-levels of function rooms are connected by a series of steps and ramps which are also linked through courtyard and light wells. In order to reduce the impact of the building mass, it has a vegetated partial roof and cascades down the hill towards the lake. Looking back from the lake, only a portion of the building is visible and most of the mass is hidden in the dense woods. In realising this design, we not only can minimise our impact on the environment but also create a unique hermitage that provides a momentary detachment from everyday life.
