One afternoon, after finishing shopping in a supermarket, my family and I went to the checkout. I suddenly thought we didnt need any of the junk, and we abandoned all of those, saving $300.

That got me thinking about all our pointless expenses in life. With a promise that wed stop if it was killing us, I convinced the family to take the leap into frugality(節(jié)儉). The rules were that we would buy nothing for 30 days except absolutely essentials.

Our adventure began with a great start. By 9 a.m., my wife, Ruth, had already made cakes from old strawberries and picked flowers I didnt even know we had in the garden. I cleared the car by hand for the first time for years. I read and returned the neighbors newspaper before he woke up. Total spending on the first day: $0.

As days turned into weeks, we became so proficient(熟練的)at living frugally. We started riding our bikes to save gas. My childs finger painting was recycled as gift wrap for the homemade presents. We started to use an Internet application like Skype for free phone calls and ask neighbors with gardens for extra vegetables and herbs.

In the end, we saved more than $2000 by not spending for a month. When we began, I imagined we would rush out the moment we were done and buy a lot of things in the supermarket, then maybe hit the mall or go to the movies.

25. We can infer from the passage that before that very afternoon, the family _________.

A. had had higher income

D. how a new idea came up

C

Being less than perfectly well-dressed in a business setting can result in a feeling of great discomfort that may well require treatment to eliminate (remove). And the sad truth is that “clothing mismatches” on the job can ruin the day of the person who is wearing the inappropriate attire(著裝)—and the people with whom he or she comes in contact.

Offices vary when it comes to dress codes. Some businesses have very high standards for their employees and set strict guidelines for office attire, while others maintain a more relaxed attitude. However, it is always important to remember that no matter what your companys attitude is regarding what you wear, you are working in a business environment and you should dress properly. Certain items may be more appropriate for evening wear than for a business meeting, just as shorts and a T-shirt are better suited for the beach than for an office environment. Your attire should reflect both your environment and your position. A senior vice president has a different image to maintain than that of a secretary or sales assistant. Like it or not, you will be judged by your personal appearance.

This is never more apparent than on “dress-down days”, when what you wear can say more about you than any business suit ever could. In fact, people will pay more attention to what you wear on dress-down days than on “business professional” days. Thus, when dressing in “business casual” clothes, try to put some good taste into your wardrobe choices, and recognize that the “real” definition of business casual is to dress just one notch(等級) down from what you would normally wear of business-professional attire days.

Remember, there are borders between your career and our social life. You should dress one way for play and another way when you mean business. Always ask yourself where you are going and how other people will be dressed when you get there. Is the final destination the opera, the beach, or the office? Dress properly and you will discover the truth in the principle that clothes make the man—and the woman. Unless you are sure what to wear, it pays to dress slightly traditionally than the situation demands.

28. What is the passage mainly about?

A. How to dress properly in a business setting.

B. The relationship between career and social life.

C. The differences between professional and casual dress.

D. Dressing codes vary in different situations.

29.Which of the following statements is true?

A. Every company has strict rules regarding office dress.

B. You can wear whatever you like if your company doesnt have high standards for it.

C. You should dress according to the business setting even when there are no fixed rules.

D. In companies with relaxed rules on office dress, you cant spot a manager among others.

30.Which statement best describes “dress-down days”?

A. On dress-down days, you can wear whatever you like.

B. Peoples clothes on dress-down days dont receive much attention.

C. We cant judge a persons taste by his clothes on dress-down days.

D. People are usually more careful about what they wear on dress-down days.

31.Which of the following is NOT the rule offered in the passage regarding business dress?

A. Remember to ask others for advice when you dont know what to dress.

B. Think about how other guests will wear if you are invited to a dinner.

C. For a business meeting and a concert, you should dress differently.

D. Dress a bit traditionally if you are not sure what to wear.

D

As the labor market becomes more attractive, more companies are sending their employees to school. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is the latest company to use tuition assistance for employees —which for decades has been a part of many business benefits packages—as part of a renewed effort to bring in and cultivate talent. And while the impact of such programs has yet to be fully assessed, many see it as a positive — although gradual—movement.

“For workers, it gives them a better opportunity for development,” says Colleen Flaherty Manchester, a professor. “For firms, they are able to recruit the type of employees who have value education and are less likely to turn over, and thus have a higher level of retention(保留) .”

In all, 56 percent of US organizations offer undergraduate educational assistance while 52 percent offer graduate assistance.

Largely driving the trend are Millennials, who happen to be the fastest-growing people in the US workforce today and to whom the idea of tuition support from employers is especially appealing. Nearly 60 percent of Millennials surveyed said they would choose a job with strong professional-development potential over one with regular pay raises. Employers are absolutely adapting to Millennials in the workplace. They recognize that they need more experience, more knowledge, more mentoring to be successful. And theyre asking for it.

Of more than 140,000 Starbucks employees, only about 4,000 have signed up for the companys College Achievement Plan. What the long-term effects such programs might have for companies retention and turnover rates remain unclear. But, the pluses of these programs are more important than the minuses. Were going to see a lot more of this in the future.

32. Using tuition assistance for employees ________.

A. has attracted a large number of talents

B. is a trend that formed recently

C. has existed for scores of years

D. is well received by employees

33. What can we learn from what Colleen Flaherty said?

A. It is merely beneficial to employees.

B. It is a win-win event for employees and employers.

C. Valuing education has become a trend for all companies.

D. It turns out to be tough for firms to find suitable employees.

34. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. Regular pay raises.

B. More chances to be successful.

C. Educational support.

D. Professional-development potential.

35. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the programs?

A. The programs can guarantee the employees a good job.

B. The impact of the programs remains to be estimated.

C. Employees will benefit more from the programs than companies.

D. Its less likely that employees will remain in the same company after receiving the programs.
