One Utah mom is facing charges after she left her 8-yearold son with special needs at Jordan Valley Medical Center,claiming she was tired of his calling her names and pulling his pants down in public.

Sherrer,36,who has three other kids (also with special needs),said she was making use of Utah’s Safe Haven law,according to reports from KLS. Under the law ,parents can drop off a baby up to three days old anonymously(匿名地)at a hospital with no questions asked or consequences.

“I thought that it was okay that we could drop them of f and it was a Safe Haven place,” Sherrer said,according to KSL News. “I don’t think I’m necessarily a bad mother. I got more like overwhelmed(不知所措的). I wasn’t sure about the Safe Haven laws or what it meant...I really did not know any other way to go about it.”

According to the police documents,her son walked up to the reception of the hospital building with a note from his mother which read,“This kid is rude and ungovernable! I do not want him in my house at all!” Hospital authorities contacted police and the boy was then taken into protective custody.

“You don’t get to drop children of f at certain institutions,” said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill. “You reach out to that organization,that organization helps process your child,there’s an understanding. Everybody understands what everyone’s role is. But you don’t simply say,‘I’ve had enough and I’m going to drop off this child and no one knows who I am.’”

Sherrer was charged with child abandonment,a thirddegree felony(罪行),and child abuse,and her son is still being cared for by social services.

Passage 2

Hong Kong product and graphic designer Ricky Ma grew up watching cartoons,and dreamed of building his own one day.

Unlike most,however,Ma has realised his childhood dream at the age of 42,by successfully constructing a lifesized robot on the balcony of his home.

The fruit of his labours of a year-and-a-half,and a budget of more than $50 000,is a female robot he calls the Mark 1. It responds to a set of programmed verbal commands spoken into a microphone.

“When I was a child,I liked robots. Why? Because I liked watching animation(動(dòng) 畫). All children loved it. There were Transformers,cartoons about robots f ghting each other and games about robots. After I grew up,I wanted to make one. But during this process,a lot of people would say things like,‘Are you stupid? This takes a lot of money. Do you even know how to do it? It’s really hard’,” he said.

Besides simple movements of its arms and legs,turning its head and bowing,Ma’s robot,which has dark blonde hair and liquid eyes,and wears a grey skirt,can form detailed facial expressions.

A 3D-printed skeleton(骨架) lies beneath Mark 1’s silicone(硅膠) skin,covering its mechanical and electronic interior. About 70 percent of its body was created using 3D printing technology.

“When I started building it,I realised it would involve many subjects,how was I supposed to code? Additionally,I needed to build 3D models for all the parts inside the robot. Also,I had to make sure the robot’s external skin and its internal parts could f t together. When you look at everything together,it was really diff cult,” said Ma.

But with Mark 1 standing behind him,Ma said he has no regrets.“I f gured I should just do it when the timing is right and realise my dream. If I realise my dream ,I will have no regrets in life,” he said.

That’s a hard truth,but one that needs to be faced when considering how you are going to make a go of it in life. A woman’s home is her castle. She usually cleans,cooks,decorates,rearranges,repairs,works,plays and relaxes within the walls of her home. Sometimes women choose to stay home to raise their children instead of working outside of the home. So you think she must be bored. I was one of those women.

After finally getting pregnant,surviving the pregnancy and birth,I found my home to be a haven. For a long time I was healing physically,emotionally and mentally. My body had been to Hell and back during the nine months I carried my daughter. Being able to relax was just what my weakened body needed. Plus,nursing was a breeze because I was unhurried and very comfortable. Staying home de f nitely healed my broken body.

Watching other families grow one child after the next was a nightmare when I didn’t think I would ever be able to have my own child. People sometimes said the most unkind and thoughtless things to me. After having Alyssa,I was able to let my heart heal from the wounds. I watched and valued at every small change of her body and personality. Nothing was more exciting or fulf lling than times spent with my child.

Mentally I remained challenged with new opportunities every day. I learned to be perfect and extremely or ganized homemaker. Everything ran like clockwork. By 9:00 in the morning,the house was clean—beds made,bathrooms cleaned,house vacuumed,windows cleaned,laundry going. I enjoyed all the tasks that made my home sparkle and shine,but f nished them quickly so that I could dedicate(致力于)most of the day to my daughter. Between nursing,naps and staring at her,I thought of ways to improve my home and myself. Even with all the chores,every day was f lled with so much fun!
