The Martian: I Colonized Mars
T hey say once you grow crops somewhere, you have officially colonized①colonize ['kɑl?na?z] vt. The English and the Spanish were among the first to colonize North America. So, technically, I colonized Mars. In your face, Neil Armstrong!
Every human being has a basic instinct②instinct 英 ['?nst??(k)t] 美['?nst??kt] n. 的天分;生來(lái)就by instinct 出于本能 on instinct 本能,憑直覺killer instinct 殺生本能 maternal instinct n. 母性本能: to help each other out. If a hiker gets lost in the mountains, people will coordinate a search. If a train crashes, people will line up to give blood. This is so fundamentally③fundamental 英 [f?nd?'ment(?)l] 美 [,f?nd?'m?ntl] adj. 基本原理;基本原則fundamental principle 基本原則 fundamental change 根本變化 fundamental research 基礎(chǔ)研究human that it's found in every culture without exception.
It's space. It doesn't cooperate. I guarantee you that at some point, everything's going to go south on you. You're going to say, "This is it. This is how I end." Now you can either accept that, or you can get to work.
No matter what happens, tell the world, tell my family that I never stopped fighting to make it home.
If I want water, I'll have to make it from scratch. Fortunately, I know the recipe: Take hydrogen. Add oxygen. Burn.
It's a strange feeling. Everywhere I go, I'm the first. Step outside the rover? First guy ever to be there! Climb a hill? First guy to climb that hill! Kick a rock? That rock hadn't moved in a million years! I'm the first guy to drive long-distance on Mars. The first guy to spend more than thirty-one sols on Mars. The first guy to grow crops on Mars. First, first, first!
*Language Tips*
Make something from scratch: 從無(wú)到有,自己制造某樣?xùn)|西。From scratch是“從零開始”的意思,在描述一些人的創(chuàng)業(yè)歷程時(shí),我們經(jīng)常會(huì)說(shuō)某人created the company from scratch,其實(shí)就是“白手起家”的意思。
