Nursing Care for a Child with an Acute Asthma Attack

Nurse: Shen Min, how do you feel? Are you feeling any better?
Patient Child: Auntie nurse, I feel much better now. I can sleep lying flat on the bed.
Nurse: You are better now. After you go home, you should continue taking the medicine, do some exercises, and don’t be too naughty. You should avoid going to public places if possible. Watch your clothing to prevent from catching cold. This will help you to prevent an asthma attack like this time.
Comments
Asthma is a common respiratory system disease in children. Children will have fear because of frequent asthma attacks. The pain from various treatment injections may also cause much discomfort. The parents also feel pain when seeing their beloved child suffer from the illness. So the nurses should not only observe changes in the patient’s condition and provide proper treatment, but they also need to evaluate and support the patients’ and their parents’ psychological needs. This will help them understand the situation they are facing, and encourage them to actively participate and collaborate with the medical personnel for the treatment to facilitate a speedy recovery for their child.

Nurse: Hello, Mrs. Li, your baby has diarrhea. Please let me check his buttocks to see if it is red.
Patient’s Mother: You don’t need to look. There is nothing wrong with his buttocks. But his pneumonia has become more serious. I wonder if the drug he took is adequate. You see, the baby is coughing and vomiting, having diarrhea, and has lost weight. If he was your baby, would you let him be like this?
Nurse: Yes. I would be worried if my baby is sick like that.
Patient’s Mother: (Bursting into tears) Gosh. I am so worried about his disease.
