UC Davis West Village, USA

The West Village Master Plan was a response to the substantive growth in the number of students, faculty and staff on the Davis campus. Rapidly escalating housing costs have forced campus affiliates to seek housing outside of Davis.
The West Village residences and apartments provide new choices for those who desire to live, work, and recreate in a sustainable residential neighborhood that is seamlessly integrated with UC Davis' core activities.
The implementation plan is based on three core principles: housing affordability, environmental responsiveness, and quality of place. The project is the largest zero net energy development of its kind in the U.S. employing revolutionary energy efficiency measures and meeting the community's energy demands through
on-site solar power generation, west village introduces a new model for environmentally responsible living. Advanced energy conservation measures, use of energy efficient appliances and optimized solar orientation in the site design has resulted in a reduced energy load that exceeds building standards by more than 50%. Achieving the goal of zero net energy is accomplished by reducing the community energy demand through energy efficient building measures while producing an on-site renewable energy supply.
Other sustainable measure included integrating storm drainage and five miles of bicycle-pedestrian paths into an extensive open space system of parks, greenways, ponds, gardens, and sports facilities. In addition to 343 homes for faculty and staff, the plan provides approximately one thousand student apartments organized around informal, interconnected courtyards. The community focuses on a mixed-use Village Center with retail and civic space, 94 residential apartments, and a Village Green. It also includes elementary, high school and community college facilities. Continuous cross-campus bicycle routes allow for easy transportation and circulation around the campus, creating a new sustainable residential community for UC Davis students.
