Image is a human construct imposed on array of perceived attributes projected by an object, event, or person. In the context of globalization, national image is a reflection of a countrys overall impression and comprehensive evaluation shown in international relations. A sound national image can determine a countrys reputation and status during the process of international communication and acquire wide international identity and public opinion support. Therefore, all countries around the world, especially the developing ones, are endeavoring to integrate themselves in the global market and to strive for a favorable place on the world stage.
However, national image is far more than the only dimension of what a country want to show others. What matters most is the farming image in the mind of the beholders. But the distance and boundaries between different countries make it impossible for individuals to obtain the chance to know the image of other nations by experience. In this way, mass media play an important role in formulating and disseminating the images of nations. Mass media have a strong impact by constructing social reality. The perception of Chinas image most of overseas viewers get is from Chinas mainstream media. So, Chinas mainstream media, in a sense, is the only way for overseas viewers know about China. The image of China in the mind of these viewers is some aspects which Chinas media wants to show them. When media frames the national image, it is considered many factors. The framing and presentation of evens and news in the mass media can thus systematically affect how recipients of the news come to understand these events.
At the time of globalization, every country gets more opportunities to involve in the international affairs, In the international course, the role of national images can be explained by power theory. A countys soft power relies on its culture, its political values and foreign policy. National images, are one part of a states soft power. It is believed that the images of a nation are public commodities that serve to generate either a favorable or an unfavorable environment for the public and the state.
As an important means to frame and promoting national image, enhance national status, mass media is often regarded as a representative of national image. So Chinese government should patrices more to use the media tool.
