Cultural Diversity and Sustainable Development
Like a long scroll painting, the ancient Silk Road has born witness to the exchanges between the Chinese and Western civilizations. The Silk Road, spanning thousands of miles and standing for thousands of years, is also a symbol of the Silk Road Spirit, namely cultural diversity, peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and mutual benefit. It is a precious heritage of human civilization. Now, this cultural exchange channel linking the East and the West has taken on a new look. Thanks to the Belt and Road Initiative, the Silk Road Spirit is still shining after millennia.
While the city of Xian is generally regarded as the starting point of the Silk Road, Hangzhous production of silk began much earlier. During and after the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1206-1368) dynasties, as the nations economic center moved south, Zhejiang became one of the major silk production bases with its highly developed sericulture industry. Zhejiang is also famed for its celadon, tea and many other goods with unique Chinese cultural characteristics, which spread all over China and the world via trade. Indeed, Zhejiang had long been a significant part of the ancient Silk Road by land and by sea.
The “2021 Silk Road Week”, which opened on June 18 in Hangzhou and closed on June 24 in Ningbo, has once again shown Zhejiangs importance along the Silk Road.
This year, the Week attracted hundreds of domestic and foreign cultural institutions and museums, rolling out a series of onsite and online activities that won praises from international organizations, participants and visitors. On Weibo, the microblogging site, over 30 museums along the Silk Road took part in a “poster relay”, each posting photos of their most representative Silk Road objects and artifacts on the platform. Focusing on the themes “exploring cave temples” and “cultural relics along the Silk Road”, some 22 museums conducted a “l(fā)ive-streaming relay”. On Douyin, dozens of cultural institutions and museums as well as experts told vivid stories about the Silk Road via short videos…Home and abroad, online and offline, these events have imbued the ancient Silk Road with a new charm, and have helped deepen exchanges between different civilizations.
