Dr. John Wilkins was a natural philosopher who lived from 1614 until 1672. He was crazy about getting to the moon and meeting the people who surely lived there. Wilkins believed that anything as Earth-like as the moon must have been created by God for living beings, and he was determined to meet them—despite the fact that he was three centuries ahead of his time.
In the 1600s, the scientific understanding of gravity and outer space was limited. Wilkins believed, like many 17th-century scientists, that there was no difference between the atmosphere of Earth and the conditions in space, and that Earths pull was due to magnetism (磁力). It was only reasonable, then, that Wilkins believed a two-wheeled horse-drawn battle car with wings with enough speed could lift high enough off the ground to break free of Earths magnetic pull and reach the moon.
Then Wilkins moved on to more pressing issues with his remarkable ability to think of new ideas: How would travelers feed themselves during the journey? He theorized that the main cause of hunger was simply the act of working against gravity, so getting to the moon without being burdened by it would be able to be realized. There was some knowledge at that time about the fact that air gets thinner and colder the higher up you go, but he had a fix for that too, “moistened sponges (濕潤(rùn)的海綿) might help us against its thinness”.
By studying the way in which birds fly, which also happened to be part of the studies that led to planes and rockets centuries later, Wilkins put his theory to the test with the help of a colleague, Robert Hooke.
4. What do we know about Dr. John Wilkins?
A. He dreamed of landing on the moon.

D. He had a rich knowledge of space in the 1670s.
5. Which of the following might Wilkins agree with?
A. The air on the moon is not fit for human beings.
B. People dont need to eat things on the moon.
C. Earths magnetism can be changed easily.
D. Oxygen doesnt exist in outer space.
6. What can be concluded from Paragraphs 2 & 3?
A. Wilkins had prepared a lot in theory.

C. Wilkins made a great contribution to philosophy.
D. Wilkins was the greatest natural philosopher in history.
7. What is the authors purpose in writing the text?

B. To encourage studies on outer space.

Authorities at the best Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai said students had stopped socializing and many were late for morning classes or slept through them.
IIT-Mumbai, with about 5,000 students, is one of the seven IITs across India which are considered to be among the finest engineering schools in the world. They are also a talent pool for global technology giants. But their hard courses, tough competition and lonely campus lifestyle have taken an effect on students. Depressive and dysfunctional lifestyles are known to be common among IIT students, and at least nine have committed suicide in the past five years. Students have unlimited free Internet access in their boarding houses to help them in their studies, but many also use it to surf, chat, download movies and music, blog and for gaming.
“Starting Monday, Internet access will be banned between 11 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. at IIT-Mumbais 13 boarding buildings to encourage students to sleep early and to try and force them out of their shells,” Gopalan said. But the move has not gone down well with students who say they hate their lives being regulated. “Now they will say we need to listen to a lullaby (搖籃曲) to go to sleep,” said Rajiv, an electronics student.
8. What may happen to the students addicted to the Internet in IIT-Mumbai?
A. Feel lonely and even suicidal.???????????? B. Perform well in studies.

11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. All electronics students hate the banning order.
B. Some students complain about the banning order.
C. There is no Internet access on the IIT campus ever since.
D. More students prefer listening to music to surfing the Internet.

Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential (潛在的) resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems.
While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human beings to survive.
While Earth is the only planet known to support life surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.
12. Why does the author mention the questions?
A. To express his doubts. ??????????????????? B. To compare different ideas.
C. To introduce points for discussion. ????????? D. To describe the conditions on Earth.
13. What is the reason for exploring space based on?
A. Humans are nature born to do so.????? B. Humans have the tendency to fight.
C. Humans may find new sources of food.???? D. Humans dont like to stay in the same place.
14. The underlined word “spin-offs” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to ____.
A. survival chances ???????????????????????????? B. unexpected benefits
C. potential resources ???????????????????????? D. physical possessions
15. Which of the statements can best sum up the passage?
A. Space exploration has created many wonders.
B. Space exploration provides the best value for money.
C. Space exploration can benefit science and technology.
D. Space exploration may help us avoid potential problems on Earth.
VII. 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項(xiàng)中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)。選項(xiàng)中有兩項(xiàng)為多余選項(xiàng)。(10分)
A rocket problem that forces astronauts to evacuate (撤退) may appear to be a plot straight out of a Hollywood movie. However, that is exactly what happened to Russian astronaut Alexey Ovchinin and American astronaut Nick Hague. _1_
The event happened shortly after the Soyuz rocket and its Soyuz MS-to space capsule (聯(lián)盟號(hào)太空艙) carrying the astronauts took off from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. _2_
The takeoff went off smoothly, but just 119 seconds later, officials from Russias space agency informed NASA the booster (助推器) had failed to separate from the capsule. _3_
Instead, they were ordered to evacuate by separating the capsule and returning to Earth in what is known as a ballistic descent mode (彈道下降模式). The sharp drop is similar to free-falling from the skies and subjects astronauts to high levels of g-force.
_4_ They appeared to be in excellent condition when they crash-landed about 20 kilometers east of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, just 34 minutes after they stopped the task. Upon arrival, they were quickly found by the rescue team from Baikonur Cosmodrome and taken to the hospital for a quick check-up to ensure they had not suffered any injuries during their rough ride back to Earth.
It will take a few weeks for experts to determine what caused the problem of the usually reliable Soyuz rocket. _5_ Hague, who was on his way to the space station for the first time later joked, “I imagined that my first trip to outer space was going to be a memorable one. I didnt expect it to be quite this memorable.”
A. To their sadness, this event became a nightmare for their future space journey.
B. The two scientists were on their way to carry out a six-month task at the International Space Station.
C. Surprisingly, the harrowing event has not stopped Hagues and Ovchinins wish to go to space.
D. Thus, the astronauts didnt head to the International Space Station.
E. And luckily, they became the main characters of the movie about space exploration.
F. Fortunately, the “movie” had a happy ending with both scientists returning to Earth safely.
G. Fortunately, Hgue and Ovchinin had been well-trained for such emergencies.
