A week ago “Sports for Life” program was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it. Here is a memo (備忘錄) for your reference when you answer the phones.

Sports 1: Basketball

We expect that this will be the most popular of the three sports. Therefore, students should be advised to sign up as soon as possible. Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong Sports Park. Each student will have to pay for the cost of hiring a bus. There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.

Sports 2: Gym

We will be using St Peters Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, there are lots of trees with plenty of shade there. Three activities, skipping, jogging, outdoor aerobics (有氧運動), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.

Sports 3: Hiking

Hiking will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90 minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers. Each instructor will cost $75/hr.

21. What is the main purpose of the memo?

A. To attract more students to join in. B. To explain “Sports for Life” to the staff.

C. To collect more ideas about the program. D. To inform teachers and students of the program.

22. Why should students who want to join in Sports 1 register early?

A. Therell probably be too many of them to take part.

B. The school has only a few basketball courts.

C. There are not enough basketball teachers to go with them.

D. A bus will be hired to take students to Kwun Tong Sports Park.

23. When will Sports 3 end?

A. At 4:00 pm. B. At 3:30 pm. C. At 3:00 pm. D. At 2:30 pm.

Louis Pasteur, the famous French chemist and bacteriologist, invented “pasteurization”. In 1854 Pasteur was made head of the department of science at the University of Lille, and it was there that he made one of his most famous discoveries. Lille was a major center for wine and beer-making, and some of the local wine-makers asked Pasteur if he could help solve the problem of keeping wine fresh. At that time, it was believed that food and drinks go “bad” due to a purely chemical process. But during a series of experiments Pasteur proved that tiny living organisms (微生物) caused food and drinks to go bad. In the case of wine and beer the organisms are already present in the form of the various yeasts (酵母) that caused the fermentation (發(fā)酵) process. Pasteur discovered that heating the wine gently for a few minutes after it had fermented would kill off the yeast that was left in the wine, with the result that the wine would remain fresh for much longer. He also proved that food and drinks could be turned bad by other organisms that were present in the air, and that they too would keep fresh much longer if they were kept in airtight containers.

The heating process was so successful that it made Pasteur famous. It was named “pasteurization” in his honor, and by about 1900 it had been widely used for processing and bottling cows milk. The result was a huge drop in the number of bottle-fed babies dying from infant diarrhea and from that time on it has been a standard treatment for milk and many other food products. This simple process has saved thousands, possibly millions, of lives worldwide.

There are many ways to find a job. It can be as easy as walking into a neighborhood store to look at its announcement board. Local stores often have areas where people can put small signs telling what kind of service they need or can provide. Such services include caring for children or cleaning houses.

Or job searchers can look in the newspaper. Local newspapers have employment announcements placed by companies seeking workers.

Another popular tool for finding jobs is the Internet. For example, people in four hundred and fifty cities around the world can use the Craigslist website to buy objects, meet people or find a job. Craigslist says that it receives two million new job listings each month.

Another useful way to find a job is through a college or university. For example, students at the University of Texas in Austin can go to the Career Exploration Center to get help in finding a job. Of course, looking for a job requires knowing what kind of work you want to do. For example, there is a book called What Color is Your Parachute (降落傘)? by Richard Bolles. This book has been helping people choose a career since it was first published in 1970.

Some experts also help people find jobs. Susan W. Miller owns a company called California Career Services in Los Angeles. She says her company helps people find jobs by first helping them understand their strengths, goals and interests. Then she provides them with methods and resources to help them find the right job.

Theres a good chance that something youve bought online has been in the hands of a “picker” first. These are the workers in warehouses (倉庫) who pick, pack and ship all those things were ordering.

At Amazon and other companies, theyre working side by side with robots. Experts say while the robots are replacing some human workers, the machines arent quite ready to take over completely.

When a robot finds its storage unit, it slides underneath, lifts it up and then delivers it to a worker—theyre called pickers. On a recent day, the computer told a picker to grab what looked like a fantasy board game. The picker found it, scanned it and placed it on the conveyor (傳輸機) belt.

“In a traditional fulfillment center (訂單履行中心) where the associate would walk to the different items, it can take hours to fulfill a customer order,” Robinson says.

Now, with the help of robots, that task takes minutes and fewer humans.

So is this a sign were entering a new industrial revolution?

“Its definitely going to take over a lot of jobs,” says Karen Myers, a scientist at SRI, one of Silicon Valleys oldest research centers.

At the same time, she says, “were running against the limits of technology.” Take “the picker” at the Amazon fulfillment center. Myers says those skills are proving to be uniquely human.

“Our fingers are unbelievably agile and the current generation of robotic operators—theyre getting much, much better,” she says. “But theyre just not quite there yet.”

Technologists say that, increasingly, humans will work side by side with robots instead of robots working alone.

Amazon says robots and humans enabled the Tracy Warehouse to fulfill customer orders faster. That means more customers and more human workers.

32. What are a pickers normal tasks?

a. Picking goods.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?b. Packing goods.
