While Madison is set to celebrate turning 11, McKenna Jodell Fox would have turned ten on the same day.McKenna was only nine months old in 2008, when she was crushed by a falling TV set as her family prepared to move house.

“Dear Birthday Girl Family,

In honour of my daughter’s 10th birthday I have chosen your birthday cake to pay for.

Each year I do this random act of kindness because I am unable to buy my daughter a cake of her own.

Smokers may ignore the health warnings by telling themselves their habit makes them look cool. After all, sex symbols James Dean and Humphrey Bogart were rarely seen without a cigarette. However, the latest evidence shows that smoking actually makes you less attractive to the opposite sex.Wrinkles from smoking a cigarette may be to blame for people judging non-smokers to be better-looking.

This was the result of a study asking more than 500 people to pick the most attractive of twins where one smoked and the other did not.Men found female non-smokers the most attractive in two-thirds of cases, while women chose nonsmoking men as the most attractive 68 percent of the time.

Professor Ian Penton-Voak, a co-author of the study from Bristol University, said,“People assume that smoking causes damage to the skin and appearance, but this is a really neat way of looking at it because these twins are genetically identical,so we can control for genetic factors involved in ageing.Appearance seems to be important to people, especially young people, so we could use these sorts of findings as a basis for future interventions to stop people smoking.”

Smoking can speed up the normal ageing, even after only a decade.Nicotine causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the outermost layers of the skin, while the chemicals in tobacco smoke damage collagen and elastin, fibres which give the skin its elasticity(彈性).

The wrinkles this causes are added to by facial expressions made when smoking—such as pursing the lips when inhaling(吸氣) or squinting to keep smoke out of your eyes.

32.Why does the author mention James Dean and Humphrey Bogart?

A.To persuade smokers to give up smoking.

B.To compare them with non-smokers.

C.To tell us many people are influenced by them.

D.To show understanding and comfort smokers.

33.What can we learn from Para.2 and Para.3?

A.500 twins were surveyed for the study.

B.Probably young people pay more attention to their appearance.

C.Female non-smokers are more attractive than male ones.

D.Professor Ian Penton-Voak is the leading author of the study.

34.What is Professor Ian Penton-Voak’s attitude to smoking?

A.Disapproving. B.Favorable.

C.Unconcerned. D.Cautious.

35.What can be inferred from the text?

A.Smokers look cooler than non-smokers.

B.Smoking may speed up skin’s ageing.

C.Smokers look younger than non-smokers.

D.Smoking should be banned right away.

When I was young and foolish I used to think that potential friends were people you liked. You had shared interests. 36 You were interested in what the other had said,or you pretended to be, at least sometimes.

37 I realize that friends are people who turn up on time.If you want to be my friend, all it would take is for you to arrive where we agreed and when we agreed. No last-minute texts. No frantic(瘋狂的) phone calls complaining that you’re stuck on the bus and the traffic is terrible. 38 So it cannot be your everlasting excuse. You can take it into consideration, and set off ten minutes early in case of a total disaster. 39 So I have every sympathy with the minister of the Holy Cross Church in Bearsted, Kent, who has started fining brides £100 if they turn up late.He says he’s going to add it to the wedding fee and return it afterwards with the marriage certificate if the couple manage to be punctual. 40 So cheer for all the brides and grooms who make it to the church on time.I’d happily count any of them as friends.

A.And now I know how innocent I was.

B.I think what he said is totally nonsense.

C.You made each other laugh and enjoyed yourselves.

D.Thus, you arrive on time or, even better, five minutes early.

E.Crowded traffic is a matter happening every day and everywhere.

F.You understood each other and gave the other in need timely help.

G.His point is reasonable, though I’m not sure if the way he makes it is wise.

Should naps(小睡) actually 61 (take) during the day? Well, we certainly know from 62 (evident)in our own sleep center and that of many other scientists that naps can give you benefits for both your brain 63 your body. But naps can actually be 64 double-edged sword because while we’re awake during the day, we’re building up sleepiness or sleep pressure. So that when you try to fall asleep at night, you’ll fall asleep quickly, 65 is a basic guarantee for a good sleep. And when we sleep, we actually release that sleepiness, almost like a valve(閥門) on a pressure cooker, so that we wake up the next morning feeling 66 (refresh).

So if you take a nap during the day, especially if you take it too late in the afternoon, you will actually release some of that sleepiness and it will make it much 67 (hard) to fall asleep and stay asleep 68 (sound) throughout the night. So the advice is if you don’t struggle 69 your sleep and you can nap regularly, then naps are just fine.

But if you do have trouble 70 (fall) asleep at night, then you should avoid naps and try and build up that healthy sleepiness in the evening.

【解題思路】根據(jù)第三段第二句“McKenna was only nine months old in 2008, when she was crushed by a falling TV set as her family prepared to move house.”

【解題思路】根據(jù)第二段第一句中的“he learnt that Madison’s cake had already been paid for—by a complete stranger”和第二段最后一句中的“The cake had been paid for by a lady known simply as ‘McKenna’s mum’”可知,這個生日蛋糕是McKenna的媽媽買的。

【解題思路】根據(jù)第一段前兩句“Smokers may ignore the health warnings...After all, sex symbols James Dean and Humphrey Bogart were rarely seen without a cigarette.”

【解題思路】根據(jù)第三段最后一句中的“Appearance seems to be important to people, especially young people”可知,外貌對于人們尤其是年輕人很重要;由此可以推斷出,年輕人或許會更加注重外貌。

【解題思路】根據(jù)第三段最后一句中的“so we could use these sorts of findings as a basis for future interventions to stop people smoking”可知,Ian Penton-Voak認為可以利用這些最新發(fā)現(xiàn)作為未來干預(yù)措施的理論基礎(chǔ)來阻止人們吸煙;由此可推知,Ian Penton-Voak對吸煙持反對態(tài)度。

【解題思路】根據(jù)第四段第一句“Smoking can speed up the normal ageing, even after only a decade.”以及最后一段中的“The wrinkles this causes are added to by facial expressions made when smoking”可知,吸煙會加快人的衰老,吸煙也會使人們臉上的皺紋增多,這自然就會加快皮膚衰老。

This was the result of a study asking more than 500 people to pick the most attractive of twins where one smoked and the other did not.(第二段第一句)

分析:本句是一個主從復(fù)合句?,F(xiàn)在分詞短語asking more than 500 people...作后置定語,修飾a study;where one smoked and the other did not為where引導(dǎo)的定語從句,修飾先行詞twins。

identicaladj.

37.A

【解題思路】空格處在段首,應(yīng)承接上文內(nèi)容;A項意為“現(xiàn)在我才意識到我曾經(jīng)多么天真”,與第一段對“朋友”的觀點形成轉(zhuǎn)折,并引出下文“I realize that friends are people who turn up on time.”,即“我”意識到朋友是那些能準時出現(xiàn)的人。故選A項。

38.E

【解題思路】根據(jù)下文中的“what I would be doing with this little tree”可知,作者購買的物品中有一棵小樹。

故選A。

故選A。

share sth.with sb.

【解題思路】根據(jù)上文中的“Let me see what I can do for you”可知,此處指收銀員從抽屜里取出幾張購物券來幫助作者減少購物費用。take out意為“拿出”;pick up意為“撿起”;make up意為“編造,組成”;work out意為“算出,解決”。故選A。

故選A。

故填be taken。

【解題思路】both...and... 故填and。

故填a。

故填which。

67.harder

故填with。

【解題思路】have trouble (in) doing sth.

So if you take a nap during the day, especially if you take it too late in the afternoon, you will actually release some of that sleepiness and it will make it much harder to fall asleep and stay asleep soundly throughout the night.(第二段第一句)

故將in改為from。

in the office意為“在辦公室”,in office意為“任職,執(zhí)政”。

故去掉been。

故將While改為When/As。

故將she改為he。

【解題思路】be interested in意為“對……

參考詞:agricultural country, water, influence, play a role in

參考詞:do good/harm to, be beneficial to, mutual understanding, respect differences

Best wishes.I’m looking forward to your early reply.Hoping you can share your ideas on this.

One possible version

Dear Leslie,

I am very glad that you have written to ask about the symbolic meaning of the dragon.

Long ago, China was a developing agricultural country that badly relied on abundant rainfall or irrigation. Thus, ancient Chinese imagined there must be a powerful God in the sky who was in charge of rainfall and any other forms of water on earth.Later, we Chinese people called ourselves the descendants of dragons, meaning agriculture fed us and hoping that we were brave, flexible and powerful enough like dragons to control our own fate from generation to generation.

Dragons are considered evil and dangerous in western culture. This suggests westerners and Chinese have different understandings of the world.Don’t you think different experiences can lead to different beliefs? It is always okay if we respect and tolerate cultural differences.

Hoping you can share your ideas on this.

Yours,

Li Hua
