死樹在流動的水里獲得重生,看起來都只不過是漂浮著的殘骸的樹枝、樹皮和樹心,在流動的水體中變成了許多海洋動植物的家園和食物。古老森林里倒下進(jìn)入水中的樹木中仍然含有多達(dá)70%的有機(jī)物,足以滋養(yǎng)細(xì)菌、真菌和昆蟲等各種生物體。石蛾和蜉蝣的幼蟲會依附在漂流木上,完成它們化為成蟲的蛻變,這些蟲子繼而成為鮭魚、火蜥蜴、蝙蝠和鳥類的食物。大的漂流木會對水流產(chǎn)生影響,形成水塘和回轉(zhuǎn)渦流,成為鮭魚的棲息地和產(chǎn)卵地,為鮭魚幼魚的成長提供了極為關(guān)鍵的庇護(hù)之地,它們在這一片片由浮木開辟出來的海上“綠洲”中孵化、捕食和躲避可怕的捕食動物,直到長大離開游向遼闊的大海。
