An intermezzo worth mentioning was that the brass quintet of Hangzhou Philharmonic played a jazz piece at the altitude of 12,000 meters to entertain the fellow passengers, making the long journey less stressful.
On the evening of February 3, 2018, the artists from Zhejiang staged their first show at Sodre Concert Theater in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. It was a full house. All the 2,000 seats were taken. Among the VIPs present at the show were former Uruguayan president José Mujica, current vice president Lucía Topolansky, Chinese Ambassador Dong Xiaojun, about 80 members from the diplomatic mission in Uruguay, and 40 cultural officials.
“The presence of ex-president and current vice president at the show was a great promotion of China-Uruguay relations. Their presence also encouraged the artists from Zhejiang,” remarked Chinese ambassador Dong Xiaojun in a press interview after the show.
Among the audience were some overseas Chinese from the local Chinese community. “I came to South American with my husband from Dandong, Liaoning Province, twenty years ago. We came here to make a career. We have made it and now we enjoy a good life here. I went back to China last year and I am very proud of the tremendous changes in the motherland. I was thrilled to watch the show staged by artists from home. They wished us Happy New Year! ” said excitedly an overseas Chinese in a press interview.
On their way back to the hotel after the show, the artists from Hangzhou were surprised to see some tax drivers outside the theater show their thumbs up to them.endprint
