endprint
Poetry Reading
in Hangzhou Embraces International Fans
By Qi Yongye, our special reporter
Hangzhou began in 2007 to hold an annual event called International Poetry Reading.
For many who have attended the event faithfully, the individual venues have witnessed the evolution and renaissance of the city proper itself.
In the first two consecutive years, the venue was the performance center of a piano firm on Wener Road. The venue used to be an auditorium of a college. One of the founders of the event observed that the spacious venue was best for poetry reading and that the atmosphere was appropriate.
In 2011, Yunhe Academy on the Grand Canal of China that zigzags through the city proper served as the venue. “The academy is dedicated to studies in five areas: books, tea, painting, flowers and fragrance. The poetry reading added a beautiful touch to the study of books,” a participant recalls. Back then, a comprehensive preservation project was in full swing along the Grand Canal. Fuyi Granary, where the academy is now located, was undergoing a restoration project. International friends attended the event at the academy and appreciated the historical significance of the granary. A few years later, the Grand Canal of China became an UNESCO cultural heritage site. Numerous events including the poetry reading event in Hangzhou helped China attain the coveted status.
In 2012, the reading was held at China Classics Study Bookstore on Fengqi Road. Professor Liu Xiang, a poet and critic, commented that the choice of such a simple venue reflected the peripheral status quo of poetry and the grassroots nature of poets and that poetry could make any ordinary venue extraordinary and beautiful. Later, the reading was held respectively at Hangzhou Fuquan Academy and Zhejiang Library.endprint
Another outstanding feature of the poetry reading is that it has an international following from the very beginning. Over years, international poets, teachers and students from dozens of countries have attended the event. These countries include Mongolia, Vietnam, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Afghanistan, Kirghizstan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Jordan, Australia, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, Brazil, France, Holland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Turkey, Russia, Italy, Egypt, Liberia, Morocco, and Cameron.
The more passionate participants of the event are international students studying in Hangzhou. A South Korean student surnamed Lan came to Hangzhou for his further study to realize a dream of his childhood years. When he was younger, he was deeply impressed by the beauty of Jiangnan in the Yangtze River Delta in films and photographs. He yearned to see the beauty in his own eyes and thought it was an area of poetry. Years later he learned from friends that Hangzhou was right where Jiangnan was. So he came to Hangzhou. So he attended the International Poetry Reading in Hangzhou.
Upon his arrival, Lan fell in love with Hangzhou: service facilities are complete, people are polite and warm-hearted, transport is fast and convenience. He soon put his roots down. And the city oozes with the essences of poetry. Scenes aptly and vividly and poetically described by Su Dongpo and Bai Juyi can be seen around the West Lake.
Hanna, a student from the United States, fell in love with Hangzhou years ago during her first visit. When she got an opportunity to take part in an exchange program, she chose Zhejiang University over Peking University so as to experience the beauty and charms of Hangzhou. She has attended the International Poetry Reading in Hangzhou for three consecutive years.
At first, most readers at the event were poets themselves. Gradually, those who love to read poems aloud began to read the poems they loved. In 2017, a group of readers organized themselves into Zhejiang Reading Association. The members are from all walks of life including radio professionals and amateur enthusiasts working in business and government offices as well as international students. Liu Zhonghu, a celebrated television host of Hangzhou Television, acts as its first president.
The readers of the association have already established a reputation across the province. So far, readers have been invited to appear at some poetry reading events. Averagely, they attend about 5 poetry reading events a month.endprint
