The New Meaning of “Horizon of Expectation” in Tomb Robbery Novels

【Abstract】With the popularization of the Internet, network literature as a new literary form has been rapidly developing relying on network media in controversy, and is extremely diversified and popular. As a branch of online novels, tomb raider novels have their unique value in literary sense and are very innovative. This paper explores the artistic innovation of theme content different from traditional novels and the mode of communication and interaction between authors and readers in the perspective of accepting aesthetic criticism of “expectation horizon” and taking “grave robbing note” as the text example.

Accepting aesthetics puts forward that readers should pay attention to their subjective initiative, and that the process of literary creation is a whole instead of independence, while dynamic process replaces static aesthetic process. That is to say, writers, works and readers are the whole of mutual connection and induction, and the three cannot be viewed cloven. Writers creation is the process of literature, works are the textual embodiment of literature, and readers reading experience is the most important final link of literary creation, and this aesthetic process is a dynamic process.

This concept breaks the previous literary criticism mode that attaches great importance to writers and works, so that the focus of exploration of works is not only on the process of “being created”, but also on the process of “being read”. On this level, tomb raiding novels, as the representative of online novels, has the characteristics of rapid and extensive dissemination and huge reader groups. The creation of online literature is different from the traditional mode of literary creation, which is usually presented to the readers not as a complete text, but in the form of chapters published in various online reading websites, with the time-sensitive creation of one or several chapters per day. When a literary work is not formed, it is difficult for us to conduct a complete analysis and criticism through the work itself, so the feedback of the reader group becomes an important way to evaluate online literature. The popularity of the Internet has become an effective communication medium with readers. Through readers comments on the Internet, writers can re-create and improve their works. This is the active function of readers which indirectly affect the reproduction of literature. It can be said that the reception of readers is a creative and active activity.

The novel of tomb-raiding is innovative in its repeated use of the “vision of expectation” and “frustration of expectation”, which is a relatively rare and innovative field of literary themes. Before this reader very few detailed understanding “burial sutra” and geomantic secret art, know to Daodou, Tufuzi, Zongzi and so on tomb-raiding jargon, heard “the cock is singing the lamp to put out do not touch gold” with the meaning of the candle of the northeast corner of grave chamber. These novel contents, on the one hand, greatly attract readers interest in reading and set up a new “vision of expectation” for readers.

Grave of the novel “the setback to expect” is commonly used in not only the use of hidden stage, the emergence of new characters or plots the turning point of winning by narrative in creation of traditional literary, it is unique in the author in his works express the understanding of the burial culture, this kind of understanding often beyond the readers own reading experience and the psychological, caused the reader have shock and weird experience. Even after a period of reading, the reader is aware of it, and the work still breaks peoples psychological expectations with the emergence of new things or supernatural events. In “grave robbery notes”, we thought the story gradually quieted down after the event of the royal palace of Lu, while the appearance of the second snake eyebrow copper fish and the disappearance of SanShu forced the protagonist to start the process of the second grave robbery, which was a completely different undersea grave. After it was over, the suspicion seemed to dissipate. This is the continuous cultivation and breaking of readers thinking pattern. Text narrative constructs a world between reality and fiction. Many things in the works are common, and people have their own life experience for them. However, the strange culture related to tombs is beyond the scope of reality.
