He is regarded a highly successful4)crossover performer with several5)albums of both classical and pop music. And he has brought classical music to the top of international pop6)charts. He is also the creator of nine complete operas.

Bocelli grew an interest in music from an early age, and started playing the piano when he was just six years old. His parents encouraged him and he also learnt to play the7)flute,8)saxophone, guitar,9)trumpet and drums. He had been born with poor10)vision, and he completely lost his sight after a football accident when he was 12. This incident is11)tragic of course, but it also gave him a special kind of12)sensitivity and added depth to his personality. Those personalities are often reflected in his music.

He finished school in 1980 and studied law at the University of Pisa. He performed in piano bars in the evenings to earn some money. Bocelli’s13)breakthrough came in 1992. He was asked by an Italian pop star to record a14)demo of Miserere. It was a song intended for a famous15)vocalist Luciano Pavarotti注1. Pavarotti was highly impressed with Bocelli’s voice, and the two became friends.

Bocelli has sold over eighty million records worldwide and was16)nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for The Prayer. He sang this song with Celine Dion注2.
