Roald Dahl and His Love of Chocolate
Roald Dahl was the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG注1, and a1)treasury of2)original,3)evergreen, and beloved children’s books. He remains for many the world’s No. 1 storyteller. He was once a4)spy, a fighter pilot, a medical inventor, and also a chocolate historian.
Roald Dahl was such a fan of chocolate that he devoted a whole chapter to it in The Roald Dahl Cookbook. Every night after dinner, Roald Dahl would offer his5)fellow6)diners a chocolate from a little red box. After all, Roald took his chocolate very seriously7)indeed—just take a look at his History of Chocolate.
On the table in Roald Dahl’s writing8)hut, there is a collection of strange and wonderful items. One of these looks like a9)cannonball, grey and fitting into the palm of one hand. It’s nota cannonball, though. It is actually a ball made of hundreds and hundreds of silver foil wrappers. When Roald was working for Shell Oil注2in London, he used to have a chocolate bar with his lunch. Every time he had one, he would add the wrapper to this ball.
Roald kept this ball on the desk along with other things that10)inspired him, or reminded him of his earlier days. Maybe he was even looking at it while he wrote some of the scenes in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

注1:《查理和巧克力工廠》(Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)、《瑪?shù)贍栠_(dá)》(Matilda)和《好心眼巨人》(The BFG)是羅爾德知名度最高的三部作品,曾獲得多項(xiàng)大獎(jiǎng),并多次被改編成電影。
