衣、食、住、行是人們基本的生活需求?!耙隆蔽涣兴捻椈拘枨笾?,可見“衣著”對人們生活的重要性。由于“衣著”與人們的日常生活息息相關(guān),與“衣著”有關(guān)的英語習語也就相伴而生。本期就讓我們一起來了解一些有關(guān)“衣著”的習語吧!
1.throw down the gauntlet/glove挑戰(zhàn)。在中世紀的歐洲,gauntlet是騎士戴的用皮革和金屬片制作的鐵手套。騎士向別人挑戰(zhàn)時就摘下手套仍在地上,如果對方接受挑戰(zhàn)就從地上撿起手套。后來人們用glove代替gauntlet。pick up the gauntlet/glove就是“迎戰(zhàn);接受挑戰(zhàn)”之意。
例如:You should pick up the glove andyou will make…你應(yīng)該接受挑戰(zhàn),你必定會成功!
2.dress to kill漂亮極了。
例如:Susan was dressed to kill at the party last night and was envied by everyone.蘇珊在昨晚的聚會上美極了,惹得大家都羨慕她。
3.knock one's socks off興奮不已:興高采烈。
例如:That our team won the match madeus knock our socks off.我們隊贏得比賽的消息令我們興奮不已。

6.tighten the belt節(jié)約,節(jié)儉。
例如:In those days he had to tighten the belt,for he had a big family to support.在那段時間里,他不得不省吃儉用,因為他有一大家人需要養(yǎng)活。
7.too big for one's boots自命不凡;洋洋自得。

10.eat one's hat不會發(fā)生的事情;不可能的事。
例如:Don't eat your hat about it.Youd better get preparations for it ahead Of time.不要認為這事不會發(fā)生。你還是提前做好準備為好。
11.pass the hat幫別人解困,相當于helpout。
例如:We should try our best to help them pass the hats.我們應(yīng)當盡力幫助他們擺脫困難。
12.common as an old shoe平易近人:虛懷若谷。
