As an important project in Shenzhen's central district, the Contemporary Art & Planning Exhibition Museum in Shenzhen is composed of two parts: the Contemporary Art Museum is a large art institution mainly for the exhibition and collection of the Contemporary Arts; and the City Planning Exhibition Hall is a window to showcase the development of Shenzhen city, as well as an important place for public participation in urban planning and home education.
The project is located on the north of Shenzhen Civic Centre, covering an area of 29,000m2with a total construction area of 90,000m2. The sevenstoried building is 48 metres high, including two underground floors and five aboveground floors. Coop Himmelb(l)au, the pioneer architecture office in Austria, won the International Schematic Design Competition of this project in 2007, and finally completed the design together with HSArchitects.
The design idea of the building is a piece of giant translucent city stone, its dynamic shape both conforms to the requirements of the central city design and moulds the building itself into an elegant contemporary arts. We set an open platform for the public in 10 metres height, in the centre of which there is a 26-metre-high giant unique sculpture providing lateral transport links and reasonably organizing the visit streamline for the two museums.
The building has a very complicated structure system. Per the irregular shape, we adopt a large number of tilt, twisted rotating curved surface despite the complex challenges to the design. We adopt BIM design during the whole process, using a variety of parametric computing platform to accurately complete the coordination between the specialties, and the information transfer and verification of the steel structure, curtain wall, lighting, and interior design. The fi nal completion of the project is almost completely consistent with the concept design, which is highly praised by architects and visitors.
It is also an important cultural symbol of Shenzhen. In the process of design, we used a number of green building technologies to make the building has a good indoor climate conditions and strong ability of biological climate regulation so as to satisfy people's comfort requirement of air, light, etc. It won the highest "three-star green building design identity certi fi cate" issued by the Ministry of Housing and Construction.
