已是成人的Philippe沒有固定職業(yè)，整天做著在父親眼中不務(wù)正業(yè)的事情——練習(xí)在繩索上行走。最后他被父親趕出家門，不得不獨立謀生。在巴黎街頭，他遇見了同樣以賣藝為生的女孩Annie。Annie懷抱吉他，彈奏著安靜的樂曲。因Philippe的出現(xiàn)，她的觀眾都紛紛跑去看Philippe的走繩索表演了，這讓她氣憤不已。在Philippe保證不再和她出現(xiàn)在同一個地方表演后，兩人言和，一起去餐廳吃飯。席間，Philippe向她說明了自己的計劃：在即將建成的世界第一高樓上走鋼索。Annie被他的大膽計劃吸引，告訴了他一個絕佳的練習(xí)場所，并陪著他一起訓(xùn)練。自稱是無政府主義者的攝影師Jean-Louis也加入了進來，他要用相機記錄下促成Philippe的偉大壯舉誕生的每個瞬間。

在一次練習(xí)中，由于鋼索的固定裝置損壞，Philippe從上面掉了下來。Philippe再次找到了Papa Rudy，請求他傳授自己選擇和固定鋼索的技巧。Papa Rudy聲稱這些秘密需要一生來練習(xí)，他只會教給自己的孩子。而Philippe則告訴他，自己愿意不惜一切來學(xué)習(xí)，無論需要花費多少錢。他最終說服了Papa Rudy，但Philippe此時并不知道，打動Papa Rudy的是他的堅定態(tài)度，而非報酬。

Philippe： I need you to teach me how to rig （裝配） a high wire.

Papa Rudy： High wire for what？ Youre a street juggler （玩雜耍的人）.

Philippe： But I need to know how to tie the correct knots. I need to know what kind of cable to use， the weight， the thickness， the load strength.

Papa Rudy： So you want me to just give you my secrets， secrets Ive spent a lifetime learning， secrets Ive only given to my sons. You want me to just hand them over to you.

Philippe： I can pay you. I have money. I dont care what it costs.

Papa Rudy： Meet me at le cirque （馬戲團） at sunrise. Bring your juggling money.

Papa Rudy傳授給Philippe的不僅僅是他所要求學(xué)習(xí)的固定鋼索的技巧，還盡己所能地告訴他走鋼索時需注意的各種細節(jié)，并讓他跟隨馬戲團到各處演出，只是不需要他參與表演。在Philippe表現(xiàn)得小有所成之后，Papa Rudy幫他聯(lián)系到了公開演出的機會。在一個不知名小鎮(zhèn)的節(jié)日聚會上，Philippe在眾人的注目中走上位于小湖上方的鋼索。然而湖中釣魚者的喧囂和嘲弄干擾了他，導(dǎo)致他無法集中注意力，從鋼索上摔了下來，掉入湖中。失意的Philippe行走在塞納河邊，抬頭看到了巴黎圣母院莊嚴的圣母塔，忽然想到了自己該做什么。

趁著半夜無人，Philippe和Louis溜上了圣母塔。在圣母塔上完成了走鋼索的創(chuàng)舉后，他重拾了自信。盡管他的舉動被法國媒體定性為“犯罪”而非藝術(shù)，Philippe仍然決定繼續(xù)他的理想之路——在紐約世貿(mào)中心雙子塔間走鋼索。

當(dāng)Philippe和Annie乘飛機來到美國，真正站在雙子塔的面前時，Philippe感受到的卻只有恐懼。這高聳入云的建筑給人無盡的壓迫感，像怪物一樣俯視著Philippe，似乎要把他的理想徹底摧毀。然而，內(nèi)心的執(zhí)著始終更勝一籌。他趁人不注意時偷偷地跑到塔頂之上，望著腳下的紐約告訴自己：這的確是無法做到的，但要放手一搏。

Philippe： I make my way to the top. Nobody stops me. And I find myself standing on an island floating in mid-air， on the edge of the void （虛空）. Of course， I automatically look across to the opposite tower. But then I have to dare to look down. Now， I think I know the void. Im a wire walker. The void is my domain， yes？ Well， not this void. But still I gather the courage to whisper. I whisper so the demons wont hear me. Its impossible. But Ill do it.

毫無疑問，沒有人能不經(jīng)歷挫折與失敗，沒有哪個勇者是真的感受不到恐懼的，只是他們最終戰(zhàn)勝了失敗，打敗了恐懼，把不可能變成了可能。
