At the threshold between the Forbidden City and the traditional courtyard houses of Beijing's Inner City, the Red-wall Teahouse tries to connect old and new, boundary and space, royalty and its public, solemnity and absurdity. The design-seven unique rooms and seven different courtyardsintroduces landscape elements from the surrounding area into the interiors of the teahouse. These light environmental touches create a range of different experiences throughout the scheme. The demolition of an old dormitory's roof created a programmatic void and clarifies the spatial relationship between within and without at the ancient red palace wall. Tiny new buildings were then inserted into this void creating the teahouse's courtyards and gardens. Within the project, dramatic shifts of space, light, and materials continuously stimulate the consideration of the value of design in traditional and modern life.
