“呆若木雞”出自《莊子·達(dá)生》，原指精神凝聚在內(nèi)的意思，現(xiàn)多用來指因恐懼或驚訝而發(fā)愣的樣子。

戰(zhàn)國時，齊宣王愛好斗雞。為了能在斗雞場上取勝，齊宣王特地請馴雞能手紀(jì)渻子幫他訓(xùn)練公雞。

齊宣王求勝心切，沒過幾天，便來催問紀(jì)渻子公雞是否訓(xùn)練好。紀(jì)渻子說：“時機(jī)未到?！?/p>

又過了幾天，齊宣王又問，紀(jì)渻子還是說不行。直到第三次，紀(jì)渻子說公雞已訓(xùn)練好了。

于是，齊宣王帶著這只訓(xùn)練好的公雞參加比賽。其他的公雞又叫又跳，而紀(jì)渻子訓(xùn)練好的公雞卻一點(diǎn)反應(yīng)都沒有。別的公雞看到它呆呆的、巋然不動的樣子竟然都被嚇跑了。結(jié)果，齊宣王的公雞贏了這場比賽。
