Chinese Hanfu Fairy Skiing to Cheer for the Beijing Winter Olympics
By Zhang Bingjing
“For now, skiing is only appealing to a small crowd in China, but I hope it could be better understood and loved. Choosing to ski wearing hanfu is my way to bring its beauty to the attention of more international friends who are closely watching the Beijing Winter Olympics.”
Recently, a video clip of a girl skiing in hanfu or traditional Chinese clothing and a red cloak at a Chengdu ski resort has gone viral online. Her sharp style and neat moves won many likes from the Internet audience with excited comments, such as “That is so cool!”, “It’s like riding a flying sword!”, “What magical Chinese Kungfu!”.
The girl in the video is called Xiaomei, who was born in the 1990s and currently lives in Beijing. Speaking of this sensational clip, she seemed a little surprised but quite happy at the same time. “That day, I was in Chengdu for some event. With my hanfu handy, I just put it on and skied a little,” explained Xiaomei. In fact, that is not her first time to ski in hanfu, for last year she did the same thing at a natural ski resort in Xinjiang. “But I haven’t done it indoors, so that could be counted as a first. I would like for more international friends to see the beauty of hanhu by doing this,” so she said.
According to Xiaomei, it is hard to ski wearing hanfu, because you need to lose the helmet if you want to look nice on camera. “Generally, skiers are well and fully equipped for self-protection. But in my case, I have been skiing for a relatively long time and assessing my personal safety properly. Besides, I do not make challenging moves wearing hanfu, and have signed an agreement with the ski resort to claim full self-responsibility of my own safety, so I think it’s fine for me to go helmet-less. However, novices should never copy that.”
Xiaomei became addicted to skiing in around 2015, under the influence of her friends. “I have many colleagues who love skiing, and we often played the sport together. Outdoorsy as I am, I gradually became attracted to it just like them,” said Xiaomei. “When I began learning to ski, I didn’t get a coach and only let my colleagues guide me. Later, I searched for training lessons online, which were not as plenty as they are now, and studied carefully whatever I could find when I was off work. I was extremely crazy about it then. On weekends I went to a ski resort if I wasn’t busy. I kept falling down in playing the sport, and was hurt really bad sometimes.” Despite all the pains and hard old days when she had to pinch and scrape for more ski practices, Xiaomei still finds it full of joy.
In the eyes of Xiaomei, the best natural ski resort is in Altay, Xinjiang, where she volunteered as a guide skier for two months in December 2019 and fell in love with off-piste skiing. Last year, she was appointed as the image ambassador of skiing in Altay, Xinjiang. “I go to Altay for a short stay every winter. Through my videos, more people get to know such a ski paradise in Xinjiang, China, and are encouraged to go skiing there.”
Xiaomei further introduced the differences between her favorite off-spite skiing and skiing as a competitive sport, with the former focusing on the uncertainty, fun and experience while the latter on the professional level.
The reason why Xiaomei is so obsessed with skiing is that it frees her mind from pressures and troubles in life, for she will only be thinking about how to do the next moves, how to make them more beautiful and how to improve her skills faster.
Many of her videos were shot using a selfie stick. When she first started ski practices, she was trying to do skiing and filming at the same time, which has turned quite easy breezy for her now. “I always study my ski recordings in spare time to check if I have done the moves right.”
Xiaomei quit her job in 2018 to start an outdoor sports business with her friends. Since March 2020, she has become a full-time blogger on outdoor sports. She named her social media channel “Xiaomei the Wild Kid”, because she sees herself as open, outgoing and adventurous. Her posts are mainly about skiing, with some other forms of outdoor sports covered as well. “I love traveling to less populated areas with incredible views and playing something new and exciting there, such as cross-country, surfing, skiing, snowmobiling, camping, kayaking and hiking. Of course, I don’t want to risk my life by recklessly taking this self-challenge thing to extremes, and all my attempts have been implemented on the premise of personal safety. I just hope my experiences and advice could help people play easier and safer.”
Seeing Xiaomei constantly challenging herself to a variety of sports, numerous netizens commented: “You must be really gifted in sports.” However, “that is not true,” as admitted by herself. “I am a slow learner and tend to fall down more, so I choose to start with easier skills and make sure the difficult ones are done within my capabilities. I am a little afraid of height, therefore the jumping part is demanding for me, and I’ve been practicing on that. Skiing is a battle against myself, because I’m clearly aware of my weak points and fears, which I want to overcome.”
Still some people are curious about how Xiaomei supports herself financially, since she seems to be on the way all year round. And here is her answer: by the savings from her previous jobs and the incomes from making appearances in sponsored publicity events and advertisements. “I don’t make a lot of money, but I work with much freedom.” Last year, she bought a new car for her father. “I want to give my family a better life. The car I bought my dad is nothing fancy but economical, and it is the first brand-new car he has ever owned. His smile just made everything worthwhile.”
As an outdoor sports blogger, Xiaomei participated in a live streaming event to summon winter sports enthusiasm in Beijing, which was initiated by the Xinhua News Agency at the end of October 2021. “I introduced indoor ski resorts and some skiing rules and equipment for my audience. For now, skiing is only appealing to a small crowd in China, but I hope it could be better understood and loved. And that is my own way to cheer for the Beijing Winter Olympics.”
