For many years, I had a recurring (重復(fù)出現(xiàn)的) dream in which I was still a little girl, with books carried in my arm, ready to go to school. Deep inside, I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. Most of all, I longed to receive my diploma (畢業(yè)證書).
But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldnt afford tuition. My hope of getting a diploma was gone. Pretty soon, I married and had three children whom I wanted to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型關(guān)節(jié)炎) in her hands, which made it impossible for her in a normal classroom. But I did not want her to live with regrets as I did. It was then that I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. So I signed her up for the night school.
Surprisingly, when Linda was filling out enrollment (入學(xué)) forms, the secretary said to me, “Mrs Schantz, why dont you come back to school?” I laughed, “Theres no way! Im 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in Eng?
lish. I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.
It was exciting to go to school again, but it was not a game. Sitting in a classroom full of kids was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging. During the day, I was still a busy married woman with loads of housework to do. In the evening, I was a hard?working student working on my courses. To my surprise, both Linda and I did very well in night school. I went back again the next semester, with my grades steadily improving.
I have to say the evening courses were not easy for both of us. But neither of us gave up. At last, I got my diploma. Whats more, I got a $3,000 college scholarship thanks to my excellent academic performance. The unfinished business in my dreams was eventually finished.
