1 The Part Where I Begin Senior Year 我是這么開(kāi)始高三生活的

Greg: I used to think about it this way—Schenley High School was a world unto[=to] itself. By senior year[高三], I had mastered the languages and customs of its various sovereign states[主權(quán)國(guó)家]. The head nods of Jock[運(yùn)動(dòng)員] Nation. The fist bumps[頂拳頭] of the Kingdom of Stoners[吸毒者]. The innocuous[無(wú)傷大雅的] witticisms[俏皮話] of the People’s Republic of Theater Dorks[呆子].

Schoolmate: Greg, how was your summer?

Greg: Summer? What does that word even mean? Like, more “summ”? In a typical high school life, you belong to one nation which can never guarantee[保證] you total security. But I thought I found a way out. Get citizenship[公民身份] in every nation. Get passports to everywhere. Just be on low-key[低調(diào)的] good terms with everyone, casually[隨便地] interact with them once in a while...in a way that is invisible[不可見(jiàn)的] to everyone else. Never commit to an interaction that won’t be casual or mellow[平和的].

Schoolmate: Your test was today?

Greg: Ugh. Tests! I’ve been there. That’s like sending troops[軍隊(duì)] to Afghanistan. Maintain relationships with citizens of the most dicked[難搞的] -upon nations. For example, Scott Mayhew, the gothic dork I’m sitting next to here. Scott, nice Berserker.

Scott Mayhew: Thank you?

Greg: It took years of cultivation[培養(yǎng)] to win his trust.

(Ill Phil is yelling)

Greg: Or the universally ostracized[排斥] Ill Phil. Yeah, that’s good. Truly a nation of one. And there were some places I simply couldn’t go. Like the cafeteria[自助餐廳]. Every last square inch of it was disputed territory[爭(zhēng)議領(lǐng)土]. It was Crimea, Kashmir, and the Gaza Strip all rolled into one. Also the part of the Indian Ocean with pirates[海盜]. Captain Phillips pirates, not Pirates of the Caribbean. Although, actually, who knows? Maybe both.

Crimea, Kashmir, and the Gaza Strip分別是克里米亞、克什米爾和加沙地帶,這三個(gè)地方均有領(lǐng)土紛爭(zhēng)。

2 The Part Where I Meet a Dying Girl

Rachel’s Mother: Rachel! I’ve got a modest little mouse here to see you!

Greg: Rachel.

Rachel: Greg, what are you doing here?

Greg: So, uh…the doctor really recommends[推薦] a strong dosage[劑量] of Gregitor.

Rachel: You already used that joke.

Greg: No. No, ’cause last time it was about Greg-acil which if you recall comes in convenient[實(shí)用的] gel-tab[膠囊] form.

Rachel: Look, I don’t want you hanging out with me. I don’t need your stupid pity. It’s fine, you can just go.

Greg: No, no. Hey, you got it all wrong. I’m not here’cause I pity you. I’m actually here just ’cause my mom is making me.

Rachel: That’s actually worse.

Greg: Yeah, I know.

Rachel: Look, it’s…it’s okay. Honestly, I, I’m fine. Just...just go.

Greg: OK, Rachel, just listen to me for a second. My mom is gonna turn my life into a living hell if I don’t hang out with you. OK. I can’t overstate[過(guò)分強(qiáng)調(diào)] how annoying she’s being about this. She’s basically like the LeBron James of nagging[嘮叨]. LeBron James plays basketball.

Rachel: I know who LeBron James is.

Greg: OK. Look, I know I’m not doing you any favors here. What I’m asking is for you to do me a favor.

Rachel: You want a favor from me?

Greg: Yes. Just let me hang out with you for one day. I could tell my mom we hung out and then we’ll just be out of each other’s lives. Deal?

Rachel: Deal.

You refuse to hang out with someone unless they make specific plans.(你不想和別人一起閑逛,除非他們已經(jīng)制訂好具體的計(jì)劃。)

3 The Part Where Rachel and I Become Actual Friends

Greg: Do you believe animals just live in our house, and everyone’s cool with it? Like real animals? Anyway. You talk now.

Rachel: You mean, talk about cancer?

Greg: Only if you want to.

Rachel: The hardest part is watching my mom trying to deal with it all. And sometimes, I mean, I do think if it ends up that she’s alone in that house…She has no one. She and my dad hate each other. She has no siblings[兄弟姐妹]. I don’t know what she’d do.

Greg: Don’t cry.

Rachel: I’m not crying.

Greg: Right, well, you know, you can cry if you need to.

Rachel: I thought you just said, “Don’t cry.” Me and my dad used to walk around the block and count squirrels.

Greg: Why? Did he work for, like, the squirrel census[

Rachel: No, it was just something we did when it was time for us to spend time together. We didn’t even say anything while we did it. All we’d say was stuff like: “Squirrel, seven.” “Two squirrels, nine.”

Greg: Jesus. You need to apply for a dad refund[償還] immediately.

Rachel: What group am I in?

Greg: What?

Rachel: Yesterday you were saying you’d mapped out[在地圖上畫(huà)出,籌劃] the entire high school by group. What’s my group?

Greg: Seriously?

Rachel: Yeah.

Greg: Boring Jewish Senior Girls, Subgroup[隸屬組織] 2-A. Please appreciate how honest I was just now.

Rachel: You’re an asshole[

4 The Part Where I Grow up with Earl

(Greg’s phone rings.)

Greg: I actually have to go.

Rachel: That’s okay. Who was that?

Greg: Sorry. Uh, that was Earl.

Rachel: Oh, who’s Earl?

Greg: You may remember Earl from 15 minutes ago.

Earl: Titties[

Greg: So, some people think Earl is my friend, but he’s really not. He’s more like a coworker. I’ve known him since kindergarten. His house is a short walk from mine, but in a much tougher neighborhood. His dad is in Texas, his mom is a depressed[抑郁的] shutin[被關(guān)在屋內(nèi)的人]. And his brother Derrick’s dog Doopie will definitely[肯定地] eat me someday.

Little Earl: Doopie, Doopie, chill[

Greg: So over the years we’ve mostly hung out at my place. Usually with my dad, a tenured[享有終生職位的] sociology[社會(huì)學(xué)] professor. And we learned pretty early on that we were the only ones who liked...for example, classics of foreign cinema. Why did we like them? It’s hard to say. Maybe it’s that they were weird and often violent[暴力的], like us. Or confusing and possibly meaningless, like life. Anyway, we liked them so much we started making our own.

Little Greg: Action!

Greg: The idea behind each one was we took a film that we liked and made the title stupider. And then made a new film to reflect the new stupid title. It’s a formula[準(zhǔn)則] that only produces horrible films, but for some reason we keep using it. We’ve made 42 films. You’d think we’d have stopped making them by now. But we haven’t.

5 The Part Where It Turns out Earl Holds Nothing Sacred

(Greg, Rachel and Earl are having popsicle)

Rachel: So, you know Greg from class?

Earl: I’ve known Greg ever since we were little. You know, I was in y’all[你們大家] kindergarten, right?

Rachel: Really?

Earl: Mmm-hmm. I remember you. You was the girl who called Justin Jones perverted[變態(tài)的]…for showing girls the birthmark[胎記](méi) on his butt.

Rachel: Oh, my God, yes!

Earl: Yeah, dude came running up, showed you his butt. You were calm. Said it, “Justin, only perverts show their butts.” I was right there.

Rachel: I can’t believe you remember that.

Earl: You’re a hero. Shut his perverted ass right down. I never forget it.

Rachel: So you and Greg are coworkers?

Earl: Naw[不,沒(méi)有], we friends. He just hates calling people his friend. Dude’s got issues.

Rachel: Yeah, he does. What’s going on?

Earl: Man, I don’t even know. It might be his folks[家人]. I mean, dude’s mom always tellin’ him how handsome he is, which he ain’t. So now he think he can’t trust anybody close to him. Dude’s weird-ass dad don’t socialize[交際] with anybody except the cat. So that’s a role model ain’t got no friends. Bottom line, dude’s terrified of callin’somebody his friend...And they sayin’, “Hey, bro, I’m not your friend.” Then he’d have to kill himself.

Rachel: But how are you coworkers?

Earl: We, um, we make films.

Rachel: Movies?

Earl: Yeah. We been making them for a few years now. We have, like, 42 in total.

Rachel: Greg! You never told me!

Earl: Well, we never told anybody ’bout them. They suck[糟糕]. I mean, they’re terrible.

Rachel: I’m pretty sure they don’t suck.

Earl: Well, you can see for yourself if you want.

Rachel: Are you sure?

Earl: Hell, yeah, don’t even worry about it. Just don’t tell nobody.

Rachel: No, of course, I won’t.

1) She says $95,000 is her bottom line.(她說(shuō)95000美元是她的底線。)

2) The bottom line is that it’s profitable.(最重要的是這有利可圖。)

6 The Part After All The Other Parts

Greg: That was the last time I saw Rachel. She went into a coma[昏迷] shortly after that, and died about ten hours later. I know I told you she doesn’t die. And I’m sorry. Deep down…somehow, I didn’t think she would. But she did. Rachel’s ashes[骨灰] were scattered[分散] in a park behind her house. Apparently[顯然地], she ran away from home once and tried to live there. It was this story her aunt told at the funeral[葬禮]. She was trying to become a squirrel. She thought she could turn into one just by being in the forest and wanting it really bad. I guess maybe that’s what Mr. McCarthy meant about someone’s life continuing to unfold[展開(kāi)]. It was weird to be learning something new about Rachel after she died. But somehow, it was reassuring[安心的] as well.

Tom: My grand God, what does a millennium mean to you?

God: It only means a minute.

Tom: My omnipotent God, what do 10,000 golden coins mean to you?

God: Just a small coin.

Tom: My humane God, please give me a small coin.

God: OK, poor man, please wait a minute.
