Andersen was born in Denmark in1805. His father was a shoemaker. Hismother washed clothes for other people.They lived a poor life.

Young Andersen studied in a schoolfor poor children. He learned weaving andtailoring at school.

At the age of fourteen， his mother wanted him to be a tailor.But Andersen refused. He moved to Copenhagen. He wanted to bean actor. Because of his beautiful singing voice， he was acceptedinto a theater. But his voice soon changed. So Andersen went backto school. He started to learn writing.

On November 11， 1843， The Ugly Duckling wasfirst published. The story was about an uglyduckling changing into a beautiful swan. Andersenhimself was such an ugly duckling. He always triedhis best to make his dream come true. Even if otherpeople laughed at him.
