每年的6月5日是世界環(huán)境日。許多國家、團體和人民群眾會在這一天開展各種活動來宣傳環(huán)保，提高人們的環(huán)保意識。本期我們就一起來聊聊環(huán)保那些事。

一、Things we can do to protect the environment

保護環(huán)境我們可以做什么

Many people think that big things should be done to protect the environment， however， it can begin with small things. Now， lets think of some actions that we can take in our daily life to make a better earth.

1. Turn off the lights when you leave a room to save electricity.

2. Turn off the shower when you are washing your hair to save water.

3. Use 1）handkerchief instead of using 2）paper napkins to cut down waste pollution.

4. Taking reusable bags instead of plastic bags when shopping to 3）reduce plastic pollution.

5. Ride a bike or take a bus instead of driving to school or work to reduce air pollution.

6. Recycle books and paper so that we don't have to cut down too many trees.

7. Using your own chopsticks instead of taking wooden ones or plastic forks when you buy 4）takeaway food.

8. Remember to throw rubbish in the bin to keep the public places clean.

9. Reuse the things you don't need anymore instead of throwing them away.

10. Clean your plate when eating to avoid wasting.

二、Garbage classification垃圾分類

When it comes to environmental protection， we may easily think of 5）garbage 6）classification. As a student， we should start doing it in our daily life， which can make a difference to our environment. Apart from garbage classification， we can also call it “7）sort your trash/garbage”， “trash/garbage sorting”， and “garbage 8）separation”. How these gargabe are sorted？ It's well-known that they can be classified into 4 kinds. Now， let's have a look at them！

1. Hazardous garbage有害垃圾

Hazard means a thing that can be dangerous or cause damage，意為危險、危害，-ous是形容詞后綴，因此hazardous為形容詞，表示有危險的。類似的形容詞還有dangerous、humerous等。

The garbage that can be harmful to the environment are hazardous garbage， such as pills（藥片），batteries（電池），used needles（用過的針）and thermometer（水銀體溫計）.

2. Recyclable garbage可回收垃圾

cycle意味循環(huán)，re-表示“重新的”，是前綴，-able是形容詞后綴，因此，recyclable表示可回收利用的，可再循環(huán)的。

Things that can be reused or recycled can be considered recyclable garbage， such as plastic bottles（塑料瓶），bottled water（瓶裝水），cardboard（硬紙板），tissue（紙巾），paper， etc.

3. Household food waste廚余垃圾/濕垃圾

Household means something generated from home， so trash that is related to food from your home belongs to household food waste， such as leftover（殘羹剩飯），peels（蔬果皮），egg shell（蛋殼），fish bones.

4. Residual waste其他垃圾/干垃圾

Most of the time residual waste is considered to be the garbage that fall outside the above three kinds of garbage. For example， cigarette ends（煙頭）and contaminated stuff（被污染了的東西）like contaminated paper or contaminated tissue are residual waste.
