It is not growing like a tree
In bulk doth make Man better be;
Or standing long an oak, three hundred year,
To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere:
A lily of a day
Is fairer far in May,
Although it fall and die that night—
It was the plant and flower of light.
In small proportions we just beauties see;
And in short measures life may perfect be.
要成就人生,
不必如巨樹,木秀于林;

本·瓊森(Ben Jonson,約1572—1637),英格蘭文藝復(fù)興時(shí)期劇作家、詩人和演員,主要詩集有《格言詩》《森林集》《灌木集》等。他受過古希臘、羅馬文化的影響,傾心于拉丁詩篇,詩作有收斂的古典美,其非戲劇詩歌有許多佳作。他的散文作品中有關(guān)文藝批評的意見,對新古典主義的形成有很大的影響。本·瓊森因在當(dāng)時(shí)文壇上極受推崇,成為作家中的領(lǐng)袖人物。
