Australia Day is an official celebration that commemorates (慶祝;紀(jì)念) the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Sydney Cove, New South Wales, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip. It is celebrated on 26 January every year.
Although it was not known as Australia Day until over a century later, records of celebrations on 26 January date back to 1808. A century later the celebration was officially recognized when in 1908 the British colonies (殖民地) of Australia formed a Federation (聯(lián)邦政府), marking the birth of modern Australia. It was not until 1935 that all Australian states and territories (地區(qū)) had used the term Australia Day to mark the date, and not until 1994 that the date was consistently marked by a public holiday by all states and territories.
Outdoor concerts, community barbecues, sports competitions, festivals and fireworks are some of the many events across Australia for this occasion. These official events are presented by the National Australia Day Council, an official council in each state and territory, and local committees. The celebration is also marked by the announcement (宣告) of the Australian of the Year Awards. This celebrates the achievements and contributions of famous Australians, both young and old, in all fields from science to sport.

As the saying goes, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” This is the way the charity organization Heifer International (國(guó)際小母牛慈善組織) wants to end world hunger.
It began in the 1930s when an American farmer, Dan West, went to Spain to help people in need. He tried to feed the people with milk. But it seemed that there would never be enough milk. It made him think that what they needed was “not a cup, but a cow”.
Dan West returned to America. He worked together with some friends to find ways to end hunger. He believed giving animals and providing training would stop world hunger. With his help, Heifer International was set up.
On Heifer Internationals website, you will see a list of animals like cows, chickens, pigs and even fish and bees. You can offer help by buying some animals for one certain family. Those animals will have babies and the families will get better lives. They will pass on the act of kindness to others. More importantly, you are buying the resources (資源) for programs run by Heifer International to help more families.
The programs also help small-sized farms. As a rule, each farmer must give his animals first female (雌性) baby to another in need. Heifer International also provides training on animals health and feeding. And these farmers all agree to teach others what they have learned as another rule.
However, there is still a long way to go. The milk may run out. But if families have their own cows, they can get plenty of milk to feed themselves. The organization wants the farmers to go on working together, helping each other and learning from each other. Maybe hunger can really be stopped.

Shyness can be an unhappy feeling. 31. ________ Scientists say that more than 40 percent of teenagers and adults consider themselves shy. Shyness is feeling a little nervous or as if you want to hide when youre around other people or in a new situation.
Scientists say such things as genetics (遺傳基因), life experiences, and environment can influence whether a person is shy. 32. ________
What happens if you are shy? Well, being shy may cause you to avoid or miss opportunities you would enjoy.
How do people overcome shyness? This is what Gilbert tells us. “When I started off trying to get over being shy, I decided to do little steps at a time, including practising smiling and saying hi to people. And it worked for me. ”
33. ________ Overcoming shyness takes time and needs practice.
Here are some tips given by scientists.
Think of what to talk about before you leave home. Prepare things to talk about before youre in a social situation. For example, if you know your classmates are interested in an upcoming event, learn about it so you can join in the conversations.
Let people know youre shy. If youre shy, just show it. 34. ________ Explain that you are shy and feel nervous but enjoy talking to people.
Make things easy for the other person. 35. ________ Do what you think might help others feel good. For example, say hello or smile.
Pick one social skill to practise at a time. Start simply. For example, smile or be the first person to say hi. Choose skills you feel comfortable enough with to practise for a day, a week, a month, or even a year.

Five Ways to Make a Great First Impression (印象)
Researchers have discovered that, in general, it only takes seven seconds for a person to start making judgments about you when they first meet you. Thats why you should follow these useful tips on how to create a good first impression.
Before meeting someone, start thinking about the purpose of the meeting. Are you trying to impress them? For example, if you want to make new friends at a social event, you will want to appear friendly. And if you decide to run for class president at your school, you will need to? appear confident (自信).
Smiling is the most important thing you can do when meeting someone new. It shows that youre friendly and makes people around you feel more comfortable. To have a winning smile, make sure your teeth are clean by brushing them every day.
Before you begin speaking, you will be judged on your body language. Therefore, its important to show trust in yourself by standing up tall and putting your shoulders back. Besides, if you uncross your arms, you will appear relaxed and friendly.
How you smell can influence peoples first impression of you. If you have a bad body smell, it will put people off. In short, aim to smell clean and avoid putting on a lot of scented (有氣味的) products.
What you wear matters. While you should look clean and tidy, its also important to dress properly, whether youre going to a birthday party or a sporting event. You should think about what your clothes say about you.

Students not only have to live, but also have to deal with a lot of hard tasks in this charitable (慈善的) activity. It has happened in eight cities and is going to four others, including Beijing, in May.
To make money, many students looked for part-time jobs and experience how hard life was. Zhang Qiyue, 14, asked more than 10 restaurants for a job and finally got one chance. “We were upset when they said no. But gradually, we got used to it,” he said. After being a waiter for an hour, he got 25 yuan.
Some made use of their talents by singing and dancing in parks or shopping malls. Many people who walked by took notice and helped them. Zhao Jiacheng, 14, drew pictures and made paper crafts (手工). “This showed its important to learn a special skill,” he said.
Living was hard, but finishing the tasks wasnt any easier. They went to different places to finish tasks in a short time. The most amazing one was when they had to exchange things worth thousands of yuan with only a piece of paper in half an hour.
“We learned how to explain to others. From a balloon to cake to a bottle of yogurt...after almost 20 tries, we succeed,” he said. They will give all of the money they made to poor schools in Tibet.
