Step 2 理解·文本解讀

目標(biāo)呈現(xiàn)

Ⅰ. 1. Commentary (an article or a book which explains or discusses something).

2. (1)the topic and the authors opinion

(2)the examples of two grandmothers? ?(3)the problems facing women? ?(4)conclusion

Ⅱ. 1. Katrina Holte quit her job, returning home with the aim of living a life of a 1950s housewife, in which she appeared to take delight.

2. The author holds disapproving attitude towards it. I think its important to remember that being a 1950s housewife was actually totally awful, and something our grandmothers and mothers fought against. (Para. 3) Romanticizing the 1950s is especially gross when you think about how women of color and poor women were treated back then, and the lack of education and choices available to them.

3. In the authors opinion, being a 1950s housewife was no fun and was something that our foremothers fought against. The author used the examples of her two grandmothers who lived in the 1950s to back up her opinion.

One of the grandmothers was tied up in household chores involving serving the husband and the children. She had no days off, but seemed not to gain credit from her husband and children. The other grandmother couldnt afford time to pursue her dream until she divorced her husband and the children grew up and left the house.

4. Womens life was restrained by their family and womens hard work and devotion to the family was often taken for granted by family members. Women seldom had chance to pursue their dreams.

5. The author intends to show that women were faced with many problems especially inequality and discrimination back then.

6. In the 1950s and the 1960s, most women were used to the unfair treatment at home let alone have their dreams and pursue them. In particular, women of color and poor women were treated more unfairly with little access to education and choices. At present, women are still faced with lack of equality in material and spiritual aspects.

Ⅲ. 1. The author intends to reveal the problems facing women by contradicting the behavior of Katrina Holte. Women of all ranks from home and abroad might be the reader of the article.

2. The author stated her opinion in a logic and clear way. However, the passage might be more objective if she can write the passage from more perspectives. If I am asked to add something to make the article more thorough, I will add the opinions of those who are in favor of Katrina Holtes behavior.

3. Personally speaking, I support the authors opinion. First of all, I place much value on my career and family. As a result, its not wise to quit ones job for the sake of serving families. Without work, I wouldnt enjoy a sense of connection and achievement which is also essential to my well?being. Second of all, being financially and psychologically independent makes for a mature woman, who benefits the whole family. Last but not least, its every womans job to fight for the gender equality instead of setting back the wheel of history.

Step 3 運(yùn)用·讀寫整合

主旨新探

Ⅰ. We are not supposed to set the same standard for every woman. Some women prefer to center around their family rather than achieve something in her career. If they do their job at home well, and enjoy what they are doing, we should respect their choices. Besides, the family may also run well if women and men have their distinct distribution of work. For example, men are responsible for earning the bread for the family while women are responsible for focusing on the growth of the children, especially their education, which can bring both potential to the fullest.

Last but not least, housewives can also make something of themselves in contemporary society. For example, they can write books or microblogs on WeChat by sharing what they are good at.

Ⅱ. There are still many problems facing Chinese females nowadays. To begin with, in remote villages of China, girls generally have less access to education than boys and are often burdened with the idea of giving priority to boys interest. As a consequence, when these girls turn into womanhood, they are at a disadvantage in terms of securing a good job. Second of all, income gap still exists between man and woman for doing the same job. Moreover, the higher the job rank is, the less the number of women is. As it turns out, women are less likely to secure job promotion due to pregnancy and raising children. Thus, married women stand a slim chance of winning the competition with men. Last but not least, when women get married, they are expected to be responsible for the emotional labor of running a household and raising the children. Chances are that women often have to struggle a balance between family and work while men are free of this kind of dilemma. Compared with men, women commit more time to family after marriage while maintaining the working hours. Under this circumstance, many of these women have to sacrifice their jobs for the sake of family interest.

Its high time that all parties concerned took effective measures to wrestle with the issues. As to women, they should break the stereotype of female by enhancing their self? value and self?esteem. Especially, they should seize the chance to improve themselves, trying to be independent financially and psychologically. Besides, they should stand up to the challenges of unfair treatment, voicing their opinions brave?ly. As for men, they should shoulder more re?sponsibility of taking care of offspring, thus eas?ing the burden of women and enabling women to pursue their dreams in parallel with men. As for employers, they should be open and fair when recruiting new employees and distributing em?ployee paychecks. In particular, when they pro?mote employees, they should take womens in?terests into account, enabling more women to get the promotion they deserve. As for government, they should raise peoples awareness of treating women and men equally, especially in terms of access to education.

Dear readers,

I am eager to hear that your new term, which has long been suspended because of the unexpected COVID?19,will restart after a bitter winter. How excited I am to embrace and witness the moment when you make a comeback in this late yet sunny spring!

Here Id like to share something with you on behalf of Crazy English. Firstly, I hope you can stay healthy, for which you should maintain good hygiene and keep your environment clean in your daily life. Just do more exercise because an hour of exercise a day keeps a doctor away. Secondly, I hope you can reduce or avoid face?to?face communication with others in the near future. Finally, I hope you can make full use of every minute to make up for the lost time and maintain a remarkable sense of commitment to yourself and our dearest motherland to overcome every potential difficulty yet to come. Do believe that sunshine always follows a storm.

May you and your family stay healthy, stay hungry, stay foolish and stay hopeful in the new term.

Yours,

Editor?in?chief Chen of Crazy English

Ⅱ. The last paragraph of this chapter uses the writing technique of irony. “With that warm welcome, Mary Lennox was left alone.” In this sentence, “warm” should be replaced by “cold”. When arriving at Misselthwaite Manor, Mary didnt receive a warm welcome. Her uncle didnt come to see her and Mrs Medlock left her alone. This sentence not only emphasizes Marys poor situation but also echoes Mrs Medlocks previous warning—dont expect a big welcome.

Ⅲ. After ten?year?old Mary Lennox lost her parents to cholera, her only relation Uncle Archibalds housekeeper Mrs Medlock took her from India to Misselthwaite Manor, Yorkshire. Paragraph 1:

Several days later, when Jennys father came in to read her story, Jenny was waiting anxiously for him on the bed. When listening to the story, Jenny was totally absent?minded, with her hands holding the necklace tightly and firmly. When the story came to an end, unex?pectedly, Jenny offered her beloved necklace to her father, with her fingers trembling automatical?ly. No one knew what the necklace meant to her. She whispered to her father, softly and gently, “Daddy, you know I love you more than the necklace.” Then, the necklace slid into her fathers hands determinedly.

Paragraph 2:

Holding the plastic pearl his daughter offered, the father dragged out a blue box. Much to Jennys amazement, a beautiful real pearl necklace lay peacefully in the box, which set her heart racing. Jenny froze there, a thrilled expression twisting her face. Before Jenny was able to say something, her father brushed a warm kiss on her face and gathered her into his arms. The dad said,“Jenny, life is like this pearl necklace. Stay strong and confident enough, and you will glitter like it every day.” Holding the genuine necklace in her hand, Jenny lifted her lip, tears beginning to blur her vision.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for reading my letter. Im writing to you to be a volunteer to fight against COVID?19.

I think I can make a contribution. Firstly, I can help to clean up our International Student Service Center. Secondly, Im willing to help take the overseas students temperature and urge them to wear their masks properly at the entrance of our service center. Thirdly, I can help give out the masks and notices at the gate of Xiashang Supermarket. Finally, I have a good command of English so that its easy for me to teach them how to wash hands correctly and put the used masks in the special trash bins.

Looking forward to your early reply.

Task 5

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. At first, he didnt fit in. He, however, volunteered to play basketball with us, and gradually made many friends. He was hard?working and willing to help others, which changed my view of private school students.

We hung out all weekend, and the more I got to know Kris, the more I liked him. One day we hung out as usual. Suddenly he stared at me and said,“Do you still remember the day you met me?” “Yes, of course!” I answered. “Actually, the first time I met you I was planning to end my life, for I lost my beloved parents. It was your kindness that saved me.” Hearing this, I felt touched, bursting into tears. “I also thought it was my fortune to meet you and be friends with you. I believe our friendship would last forever.” “Yes, you are right. We are sure to be friends all our life.” We both smiled.
