A:Vadim Sherbakov
Q1:How did you get into photography?
A:It was more than 15 years ago. It was just a hobby and I started as everybody else, shooting family portraits, macro, city etc. I was bad at it and have no direction or style, was just shooting what I saw. I started with film-camera and then later on switch to digital cameras. With film it was a bit difficult to see that you get straight away, so digital helped me a lot to developed my style and technique.
Q2:Can you describe the steps you take to photograph buildings? Such as what kind of preparation will be made in advance.
A:First I do research of a city or a place with many mediums such as Instagram, Google search , Google maps, 500px ect. I saw what other photographer done with this building. What angles, what focal length etc. Sometimes if I pass this place I will stop and shot on my iPhone just to have a preliminary reference shot or to see if this building is not abstracted by anything like construction or renovations ect. Also I check if this building have a manmade illumination at night. I will roughly determine what type of lens to use for this building. Then a wait for a good weather is starting. I love to shoot at the sunset and blue hours, it's the best time to shoot architecture.
If we talking about interior shots then I will often try to see if access to the building is open, or if there any way to get the access to it such as guided tour or other type of permissions.
Q3:From an architectural point of view, what kind of buildings do you think fit your aesthetics and are worth photographing?
A:I love many types of buildings, old, modern, religious ect. My main criteria that the building should be unusual , unique and/or photogenically beautiful. If I would be to choose only one I would say historical building is my favourite.
Q4:Why did you choose to photograph these stairs??
A:It started suddenly and unexpected. I typically photography cityscape and architecture staring at sunset, so during the day you either scouting or do nothing in terms of photography, since the is no "good " light. So one day I was thinking of shooting something during the day that requires no outside light nor depend on weather conditions, and also what can allow you to explore the different locations. Whats how "World of Staircase" and later "Look up" projects were born. I always loved great pictures os staircases so it was a natural to choose this as a day time shooting subject.
If we tasing about those stair cases and what attracted me to them is their curves, style, symmetry and colours are among the elements that inspired me to shoot them.
