Architects: DP Architects

Makan was in the void deck of a public housing block. Like most public residential void deck, it was open and porous but placeless in setting.

3 架空底層由一系列整齊的垂直柱廊組成,緊鄰住宅街區(qū)下的人行道,成為周圍的街景的一部分/The void deck, expressed in a neat array of rectilinear colonnades, was adjacent to sheltered walkway under the residential block, visible from surrounding streetscapes.

Food as core

Makan is nestled in the 50-year-old residential estate of Marine Terrace, Singapore imbued with rich socio-cultural history as well as high percentage of senior residents.

Goodlife! Makan is an innovative social initiative created by Montfort Care, a voluntary welfare organisation, to support ageing-in-place, built around meaningful pastimes that address the physical and mental wellness of seniors. This cheerfully designed 360m2recreational centre is situated at the void deck of a HDB block in Marine Parade, with a communal kitchen as its nucleus. The place aims largely at reconnecting stay-alone elderly to the wider community and facilitating multigenerational exchanges.

With cooking and dining together as the essence of the experience, this activity space provides opportunities for senior residents to interact and socialise through Singapore's rich food culture, while developing roles and responsibilities from the rituals of food preparation and consumption. The facility reinterprets social settings for the elderly, as a pioneering and alternative model that is inclusive and cost-e☆cient to create and maintain across open neighbourhoods.

Context: site, demography & quality of place

Nestled in the heart of the mature Marine Parade heartlands, the site of this social centre is located in the void deck of an early 1970s HDB three-room slab-block. It has good vehicular connectivity and surrounded by neighbouring housing blocks, nearby schools and adjacent to an existing food centre and wet market. Though well sited with a good footfall of passers-by and residents, the existing void deck site offered a porous but characterless setting.

7 它鄰近美食中心和傳統(tǒng)市場,與周邊的住宅區(qū)和停車場連接便利/It is situated near the neighbourhood food centre and wet market, well connected to surrounding residential blocks and carparks.

This 50-year-old estate has a high senior demographic, bringing with them a rich history through their personal and collective stories and experiences that make this estate culturally diverse. However, there is also an emerging sector of elderly residents suffering from social isolation - commonly known as stay-alone elderly. Furthermore, through studies of existing local senior activity centres, most of them are found to be gated and highly enclosed. The combination of geography, local demography and quality setting calls for a distinctive concept capitalising on the authentic qualities of the site, to develop a unique borderless design that helps address the imminent needs of an increasingly ageing community fabric.

"MAKAN" as core - place making through food

The design concept takes inspiration from the influence of the key East Coast locale, typically known for its richly diverse food heritage. The design also explores how the ritual of food preparation and consumption can be a generator of refreshing culinary and social experiences that not just bring elderly, but also friends and the wider community together.

The design team worked closely with the client to understand the deeper emotional, psychological and social needs of a growing aged community in Singapore. Together, the team looked into developing an alternative design that is not only comfortable, vibrant and attractive, but offers a differentiated setting from typical enclosed social centres in our city.

To begin, the design transformed the void deck into a social nucleus centered around the communal activity of food. Much consideration was given to the movement patterns of the elderly, in their daily acts of cooking, dining, cleaning up together and mingling within an intimate space. The design allows activities and skills in food preparation to be showcased, hence empowering the seniors as active contributors of society instead of objects of charity. Furthermore, these food activities are steeped with tradition, especially with the older generation, through which stories can be shared and friendships can be forged. The element of Makan (the Malay word for "eat") has the power to transcend race, religion and age.

A borderless and porous compound

Respecting the spatial quality of a void deck, the design capitalised on its porous setting to create an open and fenceless compound, to reduce social stigma and address the psyche of the stay-alone seniors. The experimental design shifts away from conventional gated or glazed up elderly activity centre models to create an inviting communal space, seamlessly integrated with surrounding streets and walkways.

Through the use of an extensive array of fullheight transparent glass doors along its entire frontage, Goodlife! Makan is conceived as a borderless space, highly accessible from its surroundings. The porosity heightens a sense of transparency, allowing effective cross ventilation and natural day light to flood the recreational and social space. Functionally, the row of glass doors also gives flexibility in keeping the facility sheltered in the event of adverse weather conditions.

This notion of openness extends to the interior space where the kitchen component forms the vibrant heart of the open plan, around which spaces were organised to complement the preparation and partaking of food. The other spaces such as the offices, counselling rooms, toilets and stores that require privacy and enclosure are intentionally kept to the sides as inconspicuous elements, where staff and volunteers can operate discreetly.

This creates a single seamless large space which provides adaptability and flexibility to cater to different scale community programmes and events, with strategically positioned mobile partitions for multiple concurrent activities. These internal spaces, blurred from the adjoining pavement and lawn area, creates a highly open and inviting atmosphere that embraces the local surrounds.

A vibrant and inclusive setting

Aligning with the client's vision of ageing as an active and lively process, a bright and vivid palette of colours and textures are used to create a distinctive and vibrant setting for the seniors. They also serve to differentiate the various functional zones within the compound - effectively aiding the elderly, especially those with mild dementia, with greater clarity on what the different functional spaces are.

In addition, an integrated furniture and shelving system housing full-bodied local spices, food ingredients and utensils such as dried red chili, biscuit tins and porcelain cutlery, are employed as wider textural indicators to reinforce the refreshing colour zoning and subtle differentiation of the kitchen and food preparation areas, as compared to the dining area and the recreation spaces.

The sense of inclusivity extends to the details of the iconography, such as the life-sized signages and pictograms, which transcend beyond text and words as the universal language to communicate with elderly from all languages and ethnic backgrounds. This inclusive gesture also introduces a touch of fun and quirkiness to the community space and contributes to its lively and dynamic character. □

LYU Xiaoquan: A borderless community spatial design method has helped this project to explore a new path for accessible design. According to the current status of the interpersonal relationships in public housing, the designer utilised the spacious accessible space on the ground floor and employed the food-oriented approach to create a living example of a borderless community for people of different ages, genders and religions. Three meals a day has become the reality and the major issue that both the ageing population and interpersonal relationships are facing. The accessible design of this project adopted the compact yet translucent space, wellequipped facilities and high-contrast colour usage to develop a vibrant accessible space with various functions, attempting to eradicate social isolation in elderly people living alone. Moreover, the people-oriented concept has been infused into many aspects including food ingredients, tableware, food processing, and so forth. Such a barrier-free spatial design with both function planning and environment building is quite remarkable. (Translated by Dandan Wang)

ZHOU Jingmin: Goodlife! has created a community space full of humanistic care. The project opens the whole activity centre on the basis of the original stilt ground structure of the house group, removes the closed auxiliary rooms on both ends, and provides the possibilities for flexible functional use through the created form of central kitchen and large space. Based on in-depth observation of the psychological and behavioral needs of the local community groups, taking "food" as the breakthrough point, it naturally forms a place for residents to stay, communicate and reunite, which not only meets the activity needs of the elderly, but also attracts community residents of different languages, cultures and backgrounds. The concept and design method of the project have explored new ways to stimulate the autonomy of the elderly, promote community neighborhood communication, and activate the idle space of the community, providing reflections on solving the problems of the aging society.
