Once upon a time, there was a girl called Natasha. She was sweet, kind and clever. Natasha’s mother died when she was a baby. Her father got married again. But Natasha’s stepmother hated her.
One day,the stepmother told Natasha to do a special job. “I need a needle and thread. Borrow them from my sister,” said the stepmother. “My sister lives in the forest. Her name is Baba Yaga.”
Natasha took some food and left for the forest. Baba Yaga was a bad witch. She lived in a strange hut. The hut stood on giant chicken legs.
Baba Yaga came out of the hut. She had red eyes and iron teeth. “Please,Baba Yaga,” Natasha said. “Your sister wants to borrow a needle and thread.”

“Well, you’d better come and wait in my hut. I’ll find them,my dear,” said the witch. Natasha saw Baba Yaga wasn’t looking for a needle and thread. She was fetching wood for the stove.
“Baba Yaga just loves to eat sweet little girls,” a thin black cat said. “I knew she wasn’t nice.” said Natasha. “And I can see she doesn’t feed you much, either.” Natasha gave the cat some food. “What a kind girl you are!” said the cat. “I can help you.”
The cat gave Natasha a towel,a comb and a small stone. “Take these things and run for your life,” said the cat. “Throw each one behind when Baba Yaga gets close.”
Natasha thanked the cat. She jumped out from the hut. She ran down the forest path. The witch was very angry. She hurried off to catch Natasha.
Natasha threw the towel behind her. The towel turned into a river. But it didn’t stop Baba Yaga. She drank the river.
