SPARK's 900 hectare master plan for Quzhou is conceived as a cluster of connected city zones which capitalise on the inherent topography of the city and its natural features, in particular the river which is at the heart of the relationship between Quzhou and its ecological fabric.
The river permeates all aspects of the master plan it provided the inspiration to create a clear city identity focused on visual, physical, and implied connections to water. Water symbolises Quzhou's rich history and the importance of the river in shaping the city's present day physical character.
SPARK has created a car free uninterrupted publicly accessible coastline and park system which offers numerous opportunities to interact with and experience the river. At key moments along the river's edge urban areas strategically interface with landscaped public spaces providing focal destinations for outdoor cafes, restaurants, concerts, and other urban uses.
Yanjiayu island is central to master plan proposal, it is the ecological icon of the masterplan that discreetly incorporates many leisure activities and visitor attractions. 4 further development zones surround Yanjiayu island, each has its own detailed plan and program aimed at the preservation and enhancement of existing city features to improve the quality of life for the city residents and visitors through the creation of new public and private buildings, gardens and river promenades.
SPARK's master plan supports and articulates the growth and ambition of the city as it seeks to meet the changing lifestyle aspiration of its residents. The 2020 people-focused master plan will create a vibrant, sustainable and active conurbation that will attract families to visit and live permanently in the city. The diverse, public and private mixed-use programs are aligned to new public infrastructure and transport networks that connect the development zones and existing pedestrian and transport networks together.
