The 17th National Titanium And Titanium Alloy Academic Exchange Meeting Was Held In Nanjing
On April, 15, the 17 Edition of National Titanium and Titanium Alloy Academic Exchange Meeting, which was organized by The Nonferrous Metals Society of China and undertaken by Nanjing Tech University, was inaugurated in Nanjing. Themed by “Innovation, Development, Application”, this meeting conducted in-depth and extensive exploration in fields of latest development, research hotspot and development priority of titanium science and technology in China in recent years.
“In recent years, titanium alloy industry has made steady progress in China. Titanium alloy has been widely applied in fields of chemical engineering, aerospace, ship industry, nuclear power and biomedical. Being critical for improving device performance, titanium alloy is not only an important type of supporting material for modern national defense construction but also an indispensable type of material for national economy development.” said Mr. Zhou Lian, academician, visiting professor of Nanjing Tech University and Honorary President of this meeting. “Titanium is also commonly used in daily life necessities, including high-end cooker, mobile phone and luxury goods.”
This meeting covered various topics, including comprehensive titanium resource utility in our country, impact environment titanium alloy technology, cost lowering technology of titanium alloy, aerospace titanium alloy material and component precision shaping technology, ship titanium alloy material and component precision shaping technology. The meeting drew over 70 units including The Nonferrous Metals Society of China, Nanjing Tech University, BAOTI Group, Northwest Institute for Non-ferrous Metal Research and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation; 6 academicians and over 530 experts and scholars coming from industries of titanium and titanium alloy metallurgy, material and manufacturing, and related application fields of aerospace, ocean engineering, petrochemical engineering and biomedical participated in the meeting; the meeting consisted of 11 fantastic plenary presentations and over 230 session presentations.
“Yield of titanium alloy material in 2018 in China was 60000 tons, accounting for 0.006% of steel, while its price is 16.9 times that of steel. Poor yield and high price is a big challenges in the application of titanium and titanium alloy.” noted the Professor Chang Hui, Vice President of School of Materials of Nanjing Tech University. “It is an important mission for China’s titanium alloy industry to develop low-cost titanium alloy and novel technologies for titanium alloy processing. This is the key to addressing bottle-neck problems of over capacity of titanium and application extension.” Prof. Chang told us that it is our goal for the next 5-10 years to reduce titanium alloy material manufacturing cost by at least 50%, improve titanium alloy material utilization to more than 90%, improve the use of titanium alloy by 5-10 times and achieve the capacity of 300000 – 600000 tons/year.
It’s been nearly half a century since the first edition of National Titanium and Titanium Alloy Academic Exchange Meeting was successfully held in Baoji in 1973. This meeting has grown into a grand science and technology event in titanium industry as well as an important platform for industry-university-research communication in titanium industry. It yields profound influence and makes great contribution to not only the improvement of scientific research level of titanium and titanium alloy in our country but also the development of China’s titanium industry. Young researchers are the driving force for the research and development of titanium alloy. Currently, there are three colleges that have set up related department, among which there are nearly 50 masters and doctors in Nanjing Tech University that dedicated to the research of titanium and titanium alloy.
