三、閱讀理解。(共10小題,每小題2分,計20分)

A

I had a friend who visited me from out of town and I wanted to show him the Toronto CN Tower. It was the second tallest building on the earth.

When we got there, we went around the outside of the tower and there was the hard metal fence connected to the building to protect the visitors. We went back inside to look for the glass floor that provided a direct view (風景) down. As soon as both of us went close to it, we stopped before walking onto it. We found that our legs began to shake.

And then I had a thought in my mind, “It is far harder compared to any other floor in this building. There is no real danger to me—its simply an illusion (幻覺). Look at all the people standing on it. And think about those who have stood on it before.” I began to take the step onto the glass floor. But I didnt look down.

I walked on the floor and looked around and thought about how wonderful the experience was. I even found myself jumping up and down.

I considered how many things in our lives we feared and exactly how most of them were actually illusions. I thought about all the things that I was hesitant to do that appeared worrying. I was glad to discover that although fear isnt a stranger to me, my wish to live a life without regret has a much stronger pull.

I was walking down the road one day when my cell phone rang. A childs voice on the other end spoke to me, “Dad, please come back soon. I miss you so much!” I thought that it was a wrong number. A short while later, the call came once again, so I replied rudely, “Youve dialed the wrong number!” and then hung up.

Then one day she kept calling me, though I didnt answer. Finally I answered the phone and heard a weak voice, “Dad, please come back. I miss you so much! Dad, Im in so much pain. Mom said you were too busy to take care of me. But, Dad, please kiss me again, OK?” It was difficult to refuse the innocent (天真的) ask. I made a loud kiss on the phone and heard the weak voice say, “Thank you, Dad, I am so...happy, so...happy...”

Shortly after this, I became curious about who had been on the other end of my phone. So I called back, and a woman answered. “Sorry, sir. I am really sorry to have troubled you. My daughter has had bone cancer since she was born. And her father died in a car accident two weeks ago. I didnt want to tell her the news. Poor baby. When she couldnt stand the painful chemotherapy (化療), she would cry for her dad because her dad always encouraged her. I really dont know what to do, so I gave her a random (隨意的) phone number...”

“How is your daughter now?” I couldnt wait to ask.? “She has died. You must have kissed her on the phone, because she died with a smile, tightly holding the cell phone...” Tears filled my eyes...
