On June 28, 2018, an exhibition of over 100 seal stones was launched at China Seal Art Museum in Hangzhou, jointly organized by China Seal Art Museum and Hangzhou Qingtian Seal Stone Art Museum. All the exhibits are from a private collection of Xia Kecheng, director of Qingtian Stone Carving Institute. All the seal stones on display are called Light Stones unearthed over the past 100 years or so. The trainees attending the Training of Trainers Workshop on Intangible Cultural Heritage for Facilitators from the Asia-Pacific in Hangzhou, in early July, visited the exhibition and wowed at the beauty of the stones. “The collection came together through Xias tremendous painstaking efforts. Of all the seal stones I have engraved, Light Stones from Qingtian are the best. They feel the best under the tip of the carving knife and they give me the best response,” commented Zhang Gengyuan, a prominent calligrapher and seal engraver.
Art of seal engraving is a special art phenomenon in China. Seal stones from Qingtian are in one of the five top categories of seal stones of China. Light Stones are arguably the top of all the stones in the five categories. The stones are called light stones because they appear translucent and extremely beautiful in the candle light.
