A Date with Hangzhou is a cultural exchanges program started in 2002 in the capital city of Zhejiang Province. Over the past 15 years, it has become a key cultural magnet that attracts both Chinese and international artists.
The event in 2016 is retrospectively considered a new milestone in the 15-year series, because it was held about two months after the G20 Summit, an epoch-making chapter in the history of the city.
The month-long exhibition ended in November 28, 2016. A Date with Hangzhou this year featured the theme of “West Lake in the Eye of Foreigners”. Artists from France, Russia, USA, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Japan and Korea presented artworks, all featuring the beauty of the West Lake, the scenic centerpiece of the ancient city.
Jean Pierre Chevassus-Agnes is a key artist of France. As a disciple of Picasso, he has followed his mentors instruction and sketched 11 times in China. He presented ten oil paintings all featuring the lake in Hangzhou.
Klim Lee, a professor with St. Petersburg Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, featured two prints at the exhibition. One portrayed the sunset moment at the Thunder Peak on the West Lake and the other delineated a nightly scene near the bell tower of the Jingci Temple.
Elena Andrianova from Ukraine highlighted her virtuosity of traditional Chinese painting. Her artwork was named “Moon and Flowers on the River in Spring”, which featured two Chinese ladies carrying a Pipa and a silk fan respectively in their hands. It resembled a traditional Chinese painting and attracted visitors attention. A professor with China Academy of Art commented that it was a great accomplishment for a foreigner to paint the ancient Chinese images and the sentiments so perfectly.
Professor Noda of Japan is accomplished in presenting photos printed with printmaking techniques. One subject he described in an artwork at the exhibition was something very familiar to local people: two young lovers cuddling on a lakeside bench.
Mykhailo Guida, a prominent Ukraine artist, is well published in China. He presented “Lotus in Autumn” at the exhibition. Visitors liked it very much.
A Korean calligrapher surnamed Choi had studied calligraphy in Hangzhou-based China Academy of Art. He presented two ancient poems about the West Lake by Yang Wanli and Su Dongpo, two poets of the Song Dynasty. Chois distinct style was well acclaimed by viewers.
