Qinghai 100 Billion Yuan Grade Lithium Battery Industrial Base will Emerge Soon

According to the latest figure supplied by Qinghai Province Economic and Informatization Commission, between January and August this year, Qinghai’s output of lithium carbonate is 7530 tonnes, output of cathode material is 5600 tonnes, output of lithium battery reaches 960MWh. As the scale of lithium battery industry fulfilled rapid expansion, Qinghai’s vision to build 100 billion yuan lithium battery industrial base by relying on resource advantage is turning into reality step by step.

Qinghai is an indisputable big province in terms of lithium resource. According to geological prospecting data, proven lithium resource reserve in over 100 salt lake zone in Qinghai is about 17.24 million tonnes, accounting for about 83% in nationwide available reserve, and one third of global brine lithium resource reserve.

In order to convert resource advantage into industrial advantage, in recent years the Qinghai Provincial Government progressively drafted plans and supporting policies,it took multi-pronged approach to intensify investment into industrial chain of lithium resources, aiming to seek transformation from “big province of lithium resource” to “powerful province in lithium industry”, and put forward to develop 100 billion yuan output value lithium battery industry in the “Thirteenth Five Year Plan” period.

It has been learned that, at present, Qinghai has constructed 33,000 tonnes of capacity lithiumcarbonate across the whole province, underconstruction lithium carbonate capacity reached 120,000 tonnes. Meanwhile, as the earliest region in China to organize problem tackling of salt lake lithium extraction technology and industrialization attempt, after over 10 years of accumulation, up till now Qinghai has developed at least 4 salt lake lithium carbonate production process routes. Meanwhile, the combined total of completed and underconstruction capacity of lithium cathode material reached 39000 tonnes, and is presenting a diversified development pattern covering phosphate-lithium, nickel cobalt manganese, and nickel manganese lithium.

“In recent years, revolving around making up for shortcoming of industrial chain in diaphragm, electrolyte, new energy vehicle sectors in lithium battery industry, Qinghai actively planned make-up projects for docking the industrial chain, vigorously implemented investment introduction in industrial chain, progressively introduced a batch of enterprises including PULEAD Technology, BYD, and Hawtai Motor, which are engaged in R&D, manufacture and sales of power and energy storage lithium ion battery, power and energy storage cathode materials.” Said Qiao Hongzhi, Deputy Director of Qinghai Province Economic and Informatization Commission, a complete industrial chain of Qinghai salt late lithium extraction -- cathode/anode material –electrolyte – diaphragm -- lithium battery manufacture -- new energy vehicle manufacture has taken shape.

It has been learned that, according to Qinghai Province’s vision to build whole industrial chain of lithium industry, through strengthening top-down design, optimizing investment environment and guidance, standardizing industrial development, by the end of the “Thirteenth Five Year Plan”, Qinghai’s salt lake lithium resource must totally fulfill local conversion through extending industrial chain, the industrial size will reach 100 billion yuan output value.
