Life is often like a game of cards—you cant help the hand youre dealt, but you can help the way you play it. It is easy for us to do something without careful thinking, but its hard for us to take back what we have done.
There was once a woman who repeated a rumor① about a neighbor. Within a few days, the whole community knew the story. The victim it concerned was deeply hurt and annoyed. Later, the woman who was responsible for spreading the rumor learned that it was completely untrue. She was very sorry and went to a wise old man to find out what she could do to repair the damage.
“Go to the marketplace,”he said,“and buy a chicken, and have it killed. Then on your way home, pluck its feathers and drop them one by one along the road.”Although surprised by this advice, the woman did what she was told.
The next day,the wise man said,“Now,go and collect all those feathers you dropped yesterday and bring them back to me.”
The woman followed the same road, but to her disappointment, the wind had blown all the feathers away. After searching for hours, she returned with only three in her hand. “You see,”said the old man. “Its easy to drop them, but its impossible to get them back. So it is with rumor. It doesnt take much to spread a rumor, but once you do,you can never completely make up for the wrong behavior.”

1. ... but you can help the way you play it.
分析:本句是一個復(fù)合句,主句為you can help the way,從句為you play it。當先行詞為the way時,定語從句的關(guān)系詞可用in which或用that或省略。
2. Later, the woman who was responsible for spreading the rumor learned that it was completely untrue.
(1)who was responsible for spreading the rumor為who引導(dǎo)的定語從句,先行詞the woman在從句中作主語;從句(2)that it was completely untrue 是由that 引導(dǎo)的賓語從句,作learned的賓語。
3. After searching for hours, she returned with only three in her hand.

So it is with rumor.
當前面既有肯定又有否定或有兩個不同謂語動詞時,就要用so it is/was with sb./sth.(也可以用it is/was the same with sb./sth.)。
