Bright Colours
"Over here, the light is different. You have to expect sandstorms and dust...": greeting us with those words, the Ambassador invited us to be aware of the climate, the context. To go beyond the operational complexities or safety matters and to focus on culture and symbols. To transform architecture into a tie, a symbol. That was our project.
Our ideas became reality and the building follows the guidelines. Open to light in winter, protected from heat in summer.
Dark and light: from the closed West facade facing the city limits and acting as a protective filter to the East facade, a wide open glass screen, the different elements of the protective envelop are shaped by the path of the sun. The cardinal orientations play a decisive role in triggering change, contrast and tension between the openings, the solar protections or the choice of materials.
Light is in the transparency of the chancery's hall, a bright backlight that enhances the passage between the outside, the inside and the garden. This is where you find dark oak and light beech, black granite and veined limestone. It's a kind of interior landscape. A dusky light, some shade or bright light will soak in the residence's hall, depending on which louvered door is open or shut.
Light is in the undulation of the sunblinds which change colour with the time of day: from grey to pink-beige or gold. Form adapts to orientation. The screen-printed blinds play with the dust, the water and the wind.
On the North side, a vast veil unfurls into a golden brown canopy. Bio climatic behaviour meets haute couture. To the South, around a skylight in the reception rooms, a Feng Shui inspired design shapes a courtyard of the 5 elements. Marble evokes a landscape, like the last vibration of light from the sky; just like an interior nature. The light appears dusky, due to the different filters on the facade with its gallery and terrace.
In the Spring, changing lights will come from the garden and the greenhouses. The interior nature will contrast with the mineral forecourt; the strong anchoring into the ground will stand against the last rays of sunshine in the sky.□(Alain Sarfati)
