桑提亞哥在海上一無所獲地漂流了84天后終于釣到一條巨大無比的馬林魚。這是一條比他的漁船還長2英尺的魚，拖著漁船整整兩天兩夜之后才被刺死。在回家的途中，老人又遭遇了鯊魚，經(jīng)過殊死的搏斗，馬林魚只剩下一副光禿禿的魚骨架……

電影中有很多暗喻，比如巨大的魚骨架，獅子和小男孩，他們或許象征著精神、力量和希望。“一艘船越過世界的盡頭，駛向未知的大海，船頭上懸掛著一面雖然飽經(jīng)風(fēng)雨卻依舊艷麗無比的旗幟，旗幟上舞動(dòng)著閃閃發(fā)光的四個(gè)字——超越極限！”作者海明威這樣評價(jià)他的作品《老人與?！?。這個(gè)骨頭里留有幾百塊彈片的硬漢作家，告訴我們怎么去面對生、老、病、死，告訴我們心該有多寬（如海一般）。老人是孤獨(dú)的，他是在理想的道路上前行的旅人，但他又是不孤獨(dú)的，因?yàn)樗囊庵臼悄菢拥膱?jiān)強(qiáng)。如果將鯊魚看作打擊，吃掉你的成功和幸福。但正如那孩子說的：“它沒有打敗你，它沒有?！保℉e didn't beat you. Not the fish.）
